First Generation

Johannes Friedrich Schaub was born in 1717 in Buss, Canton Basle, Switzerland. He married Deserte Maria Schumacher in the "Great Marriage" of 33 couples at Herrnhaag, near Marienborn, in May 1743. She was born in 1713 in Bergen, Norway, lost her father early and was brought up by her mother in the Lutheran church. In 1742 she went to a congregation of the Unity (Moravians) at Herrnhaag whereby she lost the favor of her mother who disinherited her. The newlyweds proceeded down the Rhine to Rotterdam and sailed to New York on the church-owned vessel, "Little Strength" (which was lost to a privateer on its return voyage). They arrived in Pennsylvania at the end of the year and served in the tavern (Crown Inn in Bethlehem and the Inn of the Rose just north of Nazareth), and in the mill. She was a midwife and for a while was among the Indians at Gnadenhutten. They were among the first seven couples who came from Pennsylvania to Bethabara in 1755 and here they served in the mill, commenced the first store in Wachovia, and managed the tavern from 1760 to 1773. She died in 1783 at Bethabara and only one of her six children survived her. Johannes Friedrich Schaub died in 1801 in Bethania.
