It is not known when James Pelley came to America. The first record is the writing and the recording of his will in Prince George's county in 1747. It seems that he was a man of modest means and had been in America long enough to acquire an estate. He left his "land and houses thereon at Mt. Calvert" to his oldest son, James. His "miln" near Upper Marlborough, called Bells Miln, with 10 acres of land adjoining is to be sold near Senecas, with either money or land to be shared equally between" his sons, Richard, Harrison and Calvert. His will also mentions his daughters, Sarah Leitch, Elizabeth Mills, and Margaret Launge. His two youngest daughters, Jemima and Rezia are single and under the age of 21 in 1747. To his wife, Jane, the remainder of Real & Personal Estate during widowhood.

In The Place names of Maryland, Their Origins and Meaning, by Hamil Kenny, PhD, on page 164: "Mount Calvert. El.50 "Earlier * Charles-Towne. This village is near Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County. It is also Mt. Calvert Landing. The Archives for 1711 mention "....a Ferry over Patuxent River at Mount Calvert...." Lantz states that the first county seat of Prince George's County was *Charles-Towne".... known as Mount Calvert..." The Charles suggest that the present name is for Charles Calvert."

"Note: W. H. Babcock doubts that Mount Calvert is the site of the earliest settlement in Prince George's County. But "at all events," he says, it is very old, with nothing new (1888) remaining but an estate bearing the historic name."

James (III) Pelly's name appears in several records and transactions in Maryland: Revolutionary War Record, Frederick County, MD (this part later Montgomery Co., MD), enlisted by Greenberry Gaither; reviewed and passed by Wm. Deakins, Jr.

Land Records: 1778 - deeded Seneca Landing to Wm. Deakins for 950 pounds

1785 - deeded 43 acres known as Williams' Choice, part of Resurvey of Dry Spring to Lawrence Oneall for 343 pounds

1781 - another deed for William's Choice conveyed this property to Zephaniah Dowden for 1000 pounds (thought to be near present day Georgetown)

1785 - first land purchase appears in Rowan Co., NC "he then of Montgomery Co., MD"; listed in the 1790 census, Salisbury District (NC)

1794 sells "one negroe woeman named Nell" to Jacob Booe. (Nell is an ancestor of Katie Brown Bennett, author of Soaking the Yule Log.

James (III) Pelley's will was proven in 1821, Rowan County, NC. It appears most of his family moved on to KY where they settled the hamlets of Pellyton and Neatsville. Many Pelley families claim to have come from around Columbia and Liberty, and many records appear in the mid-1800's, particularly in Adair County, KY and also in Casey Co., KY.
