Ledford Family

First Generation

The Ledford family of the Davidson and Forsyth Co. NC area traces its origins to William Ledford (ca. 1724-1798), who immigrated to Virginia in 1738 on the ship Walpoole with his brothers Henry and John Ledford. William married Elizabeth McCurry (1728-1810). Both are buried at Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist church in Davidson County. There are also descendants of this couple in Rutherford County NC. Henry Ledford died in Virginia in 1755, but three of his sons, Obadiah, Henry and Frederick, came to North Carolina, as did the third immigrant brother, John Ledford, whose land was in what is now Randolph County NC.

Previously we showed John's wife as Grisella Buis. McKaughan family information states that she was the daughter of Archibald McKaughan and Jane Mercer, a couple who don't appear on our McKaughan web page. Can anyone supply documentation for either surname?

* We've been told that George Towry (sometimes spelled Towery) died in 1794, and that William Ledford's will, written in 1796, names daughter Lydia Robins. This suggests that either George's wife was a different Lydia Ledford, or that the order of the marriages is reversed, i.e. that Lydia married John Robbins after George Towry's death. Can anyone supply additional information on this?
