First Generation

Daniel Holder was born before 1790, and first appears in the Forsyth County area in the 1830 Stokes County census. We believe that he is the Daniel Holder who married Nancy Standeford in 1816 in Orange County NC and that he is probably the son of William Holder who died in 1817 in Orange County. Although Daniel's descendants seem to have married into some of the same families as the other Holders in northwest Forsyth County, DNA testing has confirmed that this is a different Holder family that probably traces back ultimately to eastern North Carolina (Bertie County).

Daniel died intestate on February 12, 1842. Estate papers in the NC state archives indicate that a year's provision was requested for his widow Nancy, who was left "with a large family unprovided for". In the 1850 Forsyth county census, Nancy is listed as age 57, suggesting birth about 1793. She survived through the 1870 census, where she is listed as age 80.
