In the early generations, Hier seems to be the most prevalent. We have switched to Hire at the fourth generation given here.
Some of the relationships shown here are admittedly speculative - please, if anyone has good documentation on this family, let us know!

First Generation
Hans Rudolph Hier was born about 1729 in Benken, Canton Basel, Switzerland, son of Lienert Heier and Clara Lutzler, and died in 1802 in Stokes Co. NC. He moved to North Carolina with wife "Nancy" about 1781, and is in the 1790 Stokes Co. census as "Rody Higher" with two males over 16, four males under 16, and 6 females. This family appears in World Family Tree and elsewhere with some children duplicated and other questionable information. The list of children given here is based on estate papers from the NC state archives. It would appear that they were in Virginia (now Hardy Co. WV) prior to coming to North Carolina, and that some of the older children (possibly from a first marriage?) may have moved from Virginia to Ohio and/or Indiana before the parents came to NC.

Second Generation
Probable children of Hans Rudolph and Nancy? Hier
Elizabeth Hier (ca. 1769-?; maybe from a previous marriage) m. Jacob Faw; moved to Ashe Co. NC
Mary Hier m. John Wier (or Wise?)
Jacob Hier
Barbara Hier m. Abraham Stuckey, both deceased by 1820, probably as early as 1807
Chloe Hier m. Henry Roth
Leonard Hier (1776-1856) m. 1) Elizabeth Burkett (1776-1806), 2) Elizabeth Black, seems to have moved to Ohio by 1815
Rudolph Hier (ca. 1778-1822) m. Lydia Schneider (?)
Catherine Hier (1779-1856) m. Abraham Burkett (1778-1861), moved to Indiana
Isaac Hier (1776-1820) m. Barbara Burkett, moved to Ohio probably about 1810
Polly Hier (ca. 1780/1786-1846) m. Greenberry Peddycoard (1775-1847)
Anna Hier (1787-1835) m. George Hartman (1782-1855)
John Hier (maybe 1789-1872)
Benjamin Hier
David Hier (?-1849) m. 1) Susannah Vest in 1817 - did she die in 1821?; probably 2) Sarah ___ (1803-1872)
Estate papers refer to both "Mary intermarried with John Wier" and "Polly intermarried with Greenbury Peddycot" so these are presumably two different children. David and Benjamin were under age at the time of their father's death, and were still under age as late as 1814 based on guardians' bonds, which name John Hier as their guardian. Are they really sons of Rudolph and Nancy, or could they possibly be grandsons instead?

Third Generation
Possible children of Rudolph and Lydia Hier
John Hier (1795-bef. 1850); probably m. Maria Rebecca (Polly) Fischer (abt. 1798-aft. 1860) (m. in 1823)
Enoch Hier
Daniel Hier
Nancy Hier
Samuel Hier (1802-?) m. She is erroneously listed as a daughter of Leonard and Irene in some Rominger family materials, but clearly can't be, as she was born in 1807 and they didn't marry until 1838. We suspect that she is the daughter of Rudolph b. 1778, but can't rule out that another of Hans Rudolph's sons is her father.
Leonard Hier (ca. 1817-?) m. Irene Peddycoard (1817-?)
----------
Probable children of David Hire, possibly from two marriages
Wesley Hier (ca. 1818-aft. 1850) m. Elvira Ketner (abt. 1826-aft. 1850), d/o Henry and *Anna Ketner
Jonathan Hier (ca. 1819-?) died young
Solomon Hier (ca. 1820-aft. 1850) m. Evelina Ketner (abt 1821-aft.1850), Henry and Anna Ketner
Salathiel Hier (1832-1904) m. Louisa Boyer (1835-1906), d/o John Boyer and Anna Holder
**Alla Hier (ca. 1837-?), still unmarried in 1870
**Sarah Ann Hier (1839-1919) m. Alpheus Sidonius Conrad (1834-1920)
*Anna Ketner listed among the houshold members of her son-in-law, Wesley Hier and her daughter Elvira Ketner Hier in the 1850 US Federal Census, Forsyth Co., NC, p. 245 (stamped)
**Alla Hyer, age 20 and Sarah Hyer, age 19 are found on the 1860 Forsyth County, NC Census record.
