Duggins Family

This family name appears in 19th century records as both Duggins and Duggans.

Thomas Duggins (ca. 1730-1784) and Jane Gately of Tyrrell Co. NC reportedly moved to Surry/Stokes Co.. They are said by some to be the parents of John Duggins whose will is dated 22 Nov 1825 and probated March term 1826 in Stokes Co. NC. The will names his wife "Usly", presumably Ursula, three sons and four daughters.

In the 1790 census, John Duggans is living in Stokes Co. NC with only one female in his household, hence probably newly married.

Also in Stokes County in 1790 are Sarah Duggans, head of a household consisting of herself and four other females, and Agnus Duggans, with two other females, and one male under 16. No other Duggins or Duggans households are listed in Stokes or neighboring counties.

First Generation

Children of John Duggins and Ursula ______
Thomas Duggins probably m. Rody Mabe 1818
Bethany Duggins
Jane Duggins
John Duggins (ca. 1803-?) m. Jane Sisk (ca. 1806-?)
Rainey Duggins
Stephen Duggins (ca. 1806-?) m. Holly Sisk (ca. 1806-?)
Mary Duggins
The children above are named in the abstract of John's will (Stokes Co. will abstracts, by Mrs. W.O. Absher). Dates for John and Stephen and their wives are estimated from the 1850 census.

----------

Who were the parents of William Duggins, born about 1774 and died after 1830, whose wife was Lucinda.? If the 1790 census is correct, either he's the male living with Agnus Duggans, or he is not in the Stokes Co. area at this time.

Second Generation

Children of Thomas Duggins and Rody Mabe
[to be filled in]

----------

Children of John Duggins and Jane Sisk
Susan Duggins (ca. 1827-?)
James Duggins (ca. 1828-?). Did he marry Julia Ann Tilly 1855?
Andrew J. Duggins (ca. 1833-?). Did he marry Politha Pafford 1855? Could this actually be Stafford, a much more common name in this area? m. 2) Bettie _____
Eliza Duggins (ca. 1835-?)
Rebecca Duggins (ca. 1837-?)
Tempy Duggins (ca. 1839-?)
Adam Duggins (ca. 1843-?) m. Beta/Bidy Manuel
Martha Duggins (ca. 1847-?)

In 1880 Rebecca Duggins age 38 is head of household. With her are Martha 25 and Tempe 30, listed as her sisters, Lilly Duggins 7 listed as niece, and Mason Duggins 14, listed as son. The names match the above family, but the women are all younger than the 1850 census would indicate.

Eliza and Joseph Bullin are nearby, with their son James Bullin 2 and Charles Duggins age 12. Eliza is listed as age 30. Is this Eliza Duggins?

----------

Children of Stephen Duggins and Holly Sisk
Mary Duggins (ca. 1849-?)

In 1880 Polly Duggins age 62 is widowed, head of household, with Nancy 40, Mary 27 and James 31. Could this actually be Holly?

----------

Probable children of William Duggins and Lucinda
William Duggins (ca. 1813-?) m. Paulina Norton
Napoleon Bonaparte Duggins (1815-bef. 1880) m. Mary Eliza Butner (1814-1889)
maybe Charles Duggins (ca. 1833-?) m. Rhoda Meeks (ca. 1833-?)

In 1850, Lucinda Duggans age 73 appears in the Stokes Co. census. We think this is probably William's widow. John Duggans age 42, William Duggans age 37, and Charles Duggans age 27 are all living nearby. We suspect that John and William are her children, along with Napoleon Bonaparte Duggins who is in Forsyth County. Is Charles a late son, or a grandson?

Living with Lucinda Duggans in 1850 are Lucinda Duggans age 22, Rhody Berry age 24, and Edmund Berry 10. (Rhoda Duggins married James T. Berry in 1840.)

Who is Hiram Duggins who married Minerva Delap or Dunlap 1854?

W.B. Duggins and wife Nancy appears in the 1880 Stokes Co. census with 7 children. The oldest two must be from the first marriage, and we suspect that A.M. (age 13) is also. William and NAncy married in January 1867, so Nancy is probably the mother of Cordelia age 12.
