First Generation

John David Clewell (1804-1862) was born in Schoeneck, Pennsylvania, son of Francis Clewell and Anna Maria Leinbach. He came to Salem from Bethlehem in 1822, supposedly just to visit, but by 1824 he seems to have become a permanent resident of the community. He married Johanna Catharina Reich (1805-1833) in 1826, and then Dorothea Matilda Schultz (1815-1908), in 1839.

Thanks to Merrill Reich for our first information on John David Clewell and his parents. We also relied on the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina, and on the usual Forsyth County wills, cemetery records, etc.

Records of the Moravians in NC, Vol 8, 1823-1837: pg. 3798: July 12 (1827). "The single Br. Joh. David Clewell was married to the single Sr. Johanna Catharina Reich." Pg. 4066: Sept. 15. (1833) "Today unexpectedly news came from Greenville in Tennessee telling of the death on the 10th of the married Sr. Catherina Clewell (maiden name Reich)"

The Clewell family left many descendants in Pennsylvania also. Check the archived messages of the MORAVIANCHURCH-L list for several posts that give information on this family. You may also want to contact the Clewell family association.
