John Cameron Buxton (1852-1917)<P> Edward Belo was a leading merchant in Salem before the Civil War, having a very large wholesale and retail business. He was President of North Western NC Railroad during the time of its construction and was a director of the First National Bank of Salem. He occupied a similar position with Wachovia National Bank. During the Civil War, Edward Belo or his staff often wrote letters for families that could not read or write. I have a copy of such a letter on Belo stationary written for my great-great grandmother, Mary Jane Boyer Jarvis, and addressed to my great-great-grandfather, Tennyson Jarvis, Richmond, Virginia.<P> Dear Ms. Moran:<BR> Our receptionist accidentally discovered your site when she typed in the word "Belo." Our company is named for Alfred H. Belo, Sr., who was born in 1839 in the Moravian community and came to Texas after the Civil War, where he eventually became the owner of the Galveston Daily News and its parent publishing company, which he named A.H. Belo & Co. This firm was reorganized in 1926 as A. H. Belo Corporation and today owns The Dallas Morning News, several other daily newspapers, and seventeen network-affiliated television stations. Belo moved to Galveston County, Texas soon after the Civil War and lived there until 1885 when he moved to Dallas County, at the time of the founding of the Dallas Morning News. In later years he suffered from wounds received in the Civil War, and thus he spent summers in North Carolina.
