dear friend <strong>Gordon Stewart</strong> died early Wednesday morning.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><strong><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>Gordon</span></strong><span
style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'> was a man of many talents
and accomplishments. In the obituary published yesterday in <em><b><a
href="http://philipstown.info">The Paper: Philipstown.com</a></b></em> (a local
institution <strong>Gordon</strong> founded and ran after he moved to Garrison,
NY on 4 July 2010), the paper described <strong>Gordon</strong> as follows:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'>He was a man whose life included various and enriching
paths, interests and pursuits. Before he moved to <span class=SpellE>Philipstown</span>,
Stewart�s career path took him on a long and winding road from his Chicago
birthplace to, among other places, Vienna, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and
New York City. Along the way he studied in graduate programs focusing on
literature, history and music. At various times he was a theater and film
director, a screenplay writer, a trained concert conductor, a mayoral aide, a
presidential speechwriter, a stock exchange official, the CEO of a major
insurance trade association and the chairman of a pension management firm.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>The
mayor for whom he worked was <strong>John Lindsay </strong>(1971-3); the
President, <strong>Jimmy Carter </strong>(Deputy Chief Speechwriter, staring in
1978); the stock exchange, the <strong>American</strong>, where he was
vice-president (1982-9); the insurance association, the <strong>Insurance
Information Institute</strong> (President, 1991-2006); and the pension
management firm, <strong>Named Fiduciaries of the Pension Plan for Insurance
Organizations</strong> (of which he had been chairman since 2010). <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>Locally,
as the obituary notes,<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'>Stewart also founded and directed productions with the
World�s End Theater Company, helped breathe new life into the <span
class=SpellE>Philipstown</span> Depot Theatre and played a leadership role in
building financial support and art-world recognition for the Garrison Arts
Center. He organized and helped fund a special program to invite leading
artists to show work at the center and meet with local artists.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'>Stewart directed and conducted a production of John Gay�s <i>The
Beggar�s Opera</i> in 2012, turning the Depot Theatre into 18th-century <span
class=SpellE>Newgate</span> and giving the audience a perspective on the power
of satire. Of all his projects and achievements, the one that Stewart valued
most was his production of Handel�s <i>Messiah</i> last December in St. Mary�s
Episcopal Church. After studying Handel�s score intensely and assembling
a group of world-class musicians and singers, Stewart conducted two memorable
performances that embodied for <span class=SpellE>Philipstown</span> the beauty
of composition, harmony, leadership and community.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

the best ways I have ever <span class=GramE>heard,</span> he assembled and led
a fabulous array of talented musicians in its execution. It is <a

it came onto being heavily in response in response, as the obituary put it,<o:p></o:p></span></p>

class=SpellE>Philipstown</span> needed a fresh approach to community journalism
and information sharing after the <i>Putnam County News & Recorder</i>,
owned by Elizabeth <span class=SpellE>Ailes</span> and Roger <span
class=SpellE>Ailes</span>, chair of Fox News Corporation, had begun to veer
toward an ideological approach that alienated many local readers.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>You
may have read about <strong>the great newspaper wars in <span class=SpellE>Philipstown</span></strong>
in <em><b><a
href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/01/31/fox-among-the-chickens">The
New Yorker</a></b></em> magazine in an article by <strong>Peter J. Boyle</strong> ,
entitles "<strong><a
href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/01/31/fox-among-the-chickens">Fox
Among the Chickens</a></strong>" (31 January 2011). Its opening
sentences are about <strong>Gordon</strong>, as is the whole first major
section of the article. <a

entire article</a> is extremely well-worth reading, for its subject matter, as
well as for its unbelievably exciting portrayal of <strong>Gordon Stewart</strong> in

his somewhat skeptical wife <span class=SpellE>Zanne</span>--who was the
executive food editor of <em>Gourmet</em>--that they should acquire a weekend
home in Garrison two years <span class=GramE>later ,</span> in 2007, they moved
to the country full-time. Stewart eased smoothly into rural life; he
filled the walls of his new home (which was set on six acres, including a pond)
with his eclectic art collection--an Old Master here, a Jackson Pollack
there--and converted a garage into an air-locked study, where he kept his rare <span
class=SpellE>B�sendorfer</span> grand piano, which he played for hours at a
time. He staged a production of "Death and the Maiden" at the
community theater, gaining standing in the artsy set, and undertook an informal

to buy a copy of the local newspaper, the <em>Putnam County News & Recorder</em>,
partly because it gave him the chance to study the townspeople in their natural

& R.</em>, as the newspaper is known, was more than an anthropological
exercise; it was an essential act of local citizenship. Stewart and his
friends agreed that the paper was dry and gray, and displayed little instinct
for news angle, but it was that increasingly rare thing--an independently owned
newspaper focused exclusively on local events. The paper offered no
editorial opinions, leaving political discussion to the Letters to the Editor
page, invariably the most exciting section...<o:p></o:p></span></p>

interesting front-page story it had published in years: the <em>Putnam
County News & Recorder</em> had been sold. The new proprietor, the
paper reported, was Roger <span class=SpellE>Ailes</span>, the chairman of Fox
News. His wife, Elizabeth, was to become the publisher. In
Stewart's circle, the news was not well received.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:

an editorial. Headlined "DEBT, DECISIONS, AND DESTINY," the
essay criticized the Obama Administration's bailouts and spending programs...<o:p></o:p></span></p>

"Times New Roman"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'>The editorial confirmed the worst fears of those who'd most
regretted the ownership change...<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:
"Times New Roman"'>[The article goes on to describe the changed nature of the
paper and it positions; eventually describing the rise of resistance and the
desire to publish an alternative paper. <strong>Gordon</strong>
eventually figured out that the only way to begin that was financial possible
was with a virtual paper, and this eventuated in the publishing of the e-paper,
<strong><i>Philipstown.info</i></strong>, which had its "surprise
unveiling" on the Fourth of July, 2010. And there is now also a
print edition of the paper, published every Wednesday. I recommend the <em>entirety</em>
