Hello everyone, welcome to David's North Dakota Paleontology Dig Party!

This site will give you a glimpse of what happens when I go to North Dakota to join the paleontology digs - dinosaurs! (sometimes), swamp creatures from 60 million years ago, Science! Heat! [check the new photos in the updates, below]

Join me on Wednesday January 12th at 7:30 pm EST to see photos and hear stories about the digs and the people who go there. If you want to join the Zoom party, let me know and I will send you the link.

AND... we will have a special guest, Mr. Jeff Person, Vertebrate Paleontologist, and Collections Manager of the North Dakota State Fossil Collection! Jeff will talk about the dig projects, and what we learn from the fossils that are found there. We'll have a little time for Questions and Answers.

These folks run on a shoestring budget to maintain the research digs - they need basic tools for volunteers, they need scholarships to get high-schoolers out to the digs (and teach evolution)... heck, they need funds to buy a shade tent! They had one, and a storm blew it away. We had to sit in the truck shadow.

I'm inviting several dozen people to this party, so even small donations will add up.

I am hoping to raise $1,000 for the coming year. I hope you will help me do that.

If you would like to join me in that, at whatever level you want, please let me know, or you can donate right now to the project at:

You don't have to donate to be at the party, so please join me on Wednesday, January 12th at 7:30 pm EST. I will send the Zoom link in another email soon. Please let me know if you think you can join, and if you have questions, please email, call, or text!

I will be adding more to this site, below, between now and the party on January 12th, to give you more of the back story, and photos from the digs.

So please come back!

Thanks,

Bismarck Dig, summer 2018

In late 2017, Alyce showed me an article about a program to go on paleontology digs in North Dakota. I flipped. As soon as I could register, I signed up and booked a flight to Bismarck for early August.

On the first day, I walked to the Heritage Museum parking lot and met Jeff Person, Becky Barnes, and a small group of staff and volunteers. After some orientation, we rode out to a private ranch, turned off to a dirt road and got out at the dig site. We were digging around bones, and learning from the staff members who were plastering and planning to get the bones out.

See more on the Bismarck page.

Medora Dig, June 2021

When I could register for summer 2021, I decided to go in June because I was going to be running a summer program for teenagers (again) in Newton and couldn't be out of town in July. So I registered for the June dig in Medora, ND. I was not disappointed. It was a different location, and a different geologic time era, but the same great staff people.
