The mission of The Health Institute is to improve individual and population health by advancing measurement of and knowledge about the social, behavioral, medical and biologic factors that influence health. To accomplish this, The Health Institute:

<LI>Develops tools to advance the science of outcomes measurement and monitoring from the patient's point of view</LI>
<LI>Engages in large-scale research projects to examine the links between structure, process and outcomes of health care</LI>
<LI>Conducts multidisciplinary research into the complex pathways linking health and its social, behavioral, medical and biologic determinants</LI>
<LI>Works with clinicians, government and industry to translate research into practice and policy.</LI>
</UL>
In its initial years, THI was home to the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) - a landmark study designed to measure the relationship between the organization and delivery of medical care and the functional health outcomes of patients. Among the founding scientists of The Health Institute were Dr. John E. Ware, Principal Investigator of the MOS; and Dr. Alvin R. Tarlov, Director of THI from 1990-1999.

Now directed by Dr. Dana Gelb Safran, The Health Institute is involved in dozens of large-scale studies, each dedicated to improving health and health care delivery, and each seeking to contribute to knowledge about individual and societal determinants of health and well-being.

There are five principal program areas for research at The Health Institute: These are: (1) The Program on Work, Health and Disability, led by Debra Lerner, Ph.D; (2) The Program on Primary Care Quality, Access and Policy, led by Dana Gelb Safran, Sc.D.; (3) The Program on Improving Mental Health Treatment and Outcomes in Primary Care, led by David Adler, M.D. and Kathleen Bungay, Pharm.D.; (4) The Program on Outcomes Measurement and Interpretation, led by Ira Wilson, M.D., and William Rogers, Ph.D. and (5) The Program on Pain Research, Education and Policy, led by Kathy Lasch, Ph.D.
