In its initial years, The Health Institute was home to the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) - a landmark study designed to measure the relationship between the organization and delivery of medical care and the functional health outcomes of patients.

The Health Institute's overall mission is to improve health by advancing measurement of and knowledge about, the social, behavioral, medical, and biological factors that influence individual and population health. To accomplish this goal, The Health Institute develops tools to advance the science of outcomes measurement from the patient's point of view; engages in large-scale research projects to examine the links between structure, process, and outcomes of health care; conducts multidisciplinary research into the complex pathways linking health and its social, behavioral, medical, and biological determinants; and works with clinicians, government, and industry to translate research into practice and policy.
