The Center for Clinical Evidence Synthesis (CCES) promotes both the application of evidence-based methods to healthcare topics and the development of methodologies in evidence synthesis. Situated in an environment with diversity and depth of clinical and methodological collaborators, CCES members have become internationally recognized leaders in meta-analysis and evidence-based practice. Led by Dr. Joseph Lau since its inception in 1992, the CCES conducts its work through two specialized Centers: AHRQ-designated Tufts-NEMC Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) and the Boston Branch of the US Cochrane Center. The CCES includes experts in the fields of meta-analysis, clinical data synthesis, decision and cost-effectiveness analysis, clinical guideline creation and evaluation, and health services' effectiveness and outcomes research. CCES members, who have broad-based interests in various methodological approaches to the problems of clinical evidence synthesis, have made pioneering contributions in such areas as cumulative meta-analysis, reliability of meta-analysis of small trials compared with large trials, the use of baseline risk to interpret clinical trial results, and the comparison of random and fixed effects models in the face of heterogeneity.

The Tufts-NEMC AHRQ Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) is one of the first EPCs named in 1997 by the AHRQ to promote evidence-based practice. Through contracts with the AHRQ and collaboration with public and private organization 'science partners,' the EPC's clinical and methodological experts develop evidence reports and technology assessments based on rigorous and comprehensive analyses of relevant scientific literature, emphasizing detailed documentation of methods, rationale, and assumptions. In 2000, the Tufts-NEMC EPC also began to provide technical support for the AHRQ's Technology Assessment Program (TAP) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), producing technology assessments of the available evidence on a given topic.

The Boston Branch of the U.S. Cochrane Center (USCC-Boston), led by Dr. Lau, was designated as the New England Cochrane Center in 1996 and part of the international Cochrane Collaboration. Based in the CCES, it is one of three branches of the U.S. Cochrane. As a Center, USCC-Boston provides infrastructure to support the overall goal of the Cochrane Collaboration, which is to conduct and disseminate systematic reviews of healthcare interventions. The Center provides training for those who want to conduct systematic reviews, supports local review groups and individual reviewers, promotes the use of the Cochrane Library, and facilitates communication within the Cochrane Collaboration.

In addition to providing basic support to collaborative review groups, the Center has focused on developing analytic methods and software. Dr. Lau and several CCES members are both active participants in several methods groups in the Collaboration and frequent contributors at the annual Cochrane Colloquium, the most concentrated forum for presentation of evidence-based methodological research in the world.
