<B><P>Judging Art</P>

<P>What do you see when you look at a work of art? Deciding on the value of a painting, sculpture, or print can be complex, but here are some questions that the owner of the artwork needs to ask and the professional appraiser needs to know:</P>
<UL>
<LI>Quality: Is this work an important example of the artist’s production?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Stature: Is the artist internationally known and respected within the artworld?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Rarity: Is this one of a few examples left of the artist’s work? Is a work by this artist difficult to obtain on the market?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Atypical: Does this work have a different look from the kind of work for which the artist is best known? Know the difference between the unusual and the undesirable.</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Medium: Most artists have established reputations for excelling in oil or pastel or chalk, but not all media at once. Is this an example of the artist’s most important medium?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Condition: Has there been restoration and how does it impact on value? For all but contemporary paintings ask for condition reports.</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Dimensions: Is the work so large that its pool of potential collectors is probably very small? </LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Provenance: Is the history of ownership known? Crucial information for older paintings.</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Period: Is this a desirable period in the artist’s career or was the work created at a time when the artist was producing less desirable work?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Fashion: Is the artist currently selling well at auction and in his representative galleries? In other words, is he in fashion currently?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Exposure: Has the work of art been offered for sale several times and failed to sell? Too many failed attempts to sell a work of art impacts on its reputation and desirability.</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Literature: Has anything been written about the artist in newspapers or periodicals?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Exhibitions: Has the work been shown publicly at a museum, gallery or institution?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Signed/Dated: Is the absence of a signature or date unusual for the named artist?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Production: Too many artworks available may indicate poor sales for a particular artist. Does it look like the galleries are having a problem moving the artworks?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Position: A regional artist may command high prices locally, but sell for very little at auction internationally. Has this been checked?</LI></UL>
<UL>
<LI>Authenticity: Appraisers do not authenticate, but should be able to contact the experts who do, just as auction houses must contact the same experts. Authenticity is usually only an issue when dealing with older paintings, but don’t trust family legends to take the place of proof that the work is by the artist whose signature appears on the painting.</LI></UL>
<A NAME="Valuing"></A>
<P>Valuing a work of art isn’t magic. It often takes intense research. It always takes relevant knowledge of art history and the art market. When you see an appraiser come up with all that information instantly on a TV program, and put a price on an artwork at the same time, it means he has had time to research the object — although the viewer never sees what goes on before the show has been taped. Valuing art is serious business. Don’t mistake it for mind-reading.</P>
