Hello everyone, welcome to David's North Dakota Paleontology Dig Party!

This site will give you a glimpse of what happens when I go to North Dakota to join the paleontology digs - dinosaurs! (sometimes), swamp creatures from 60 million years ago, Science! Heat! [check the new photos in the updates, below]

New Updates for 2024!

Join me on Wednesday March **, 2024 at 7:30 pm EDT to see photos and hear new stories about the digs and the people who go there. If you want to join the Zoom party, let me know and I will send you the link.

As we did in 2022, we will have a special guest - this year Dr. Clint A. Boyd, Senior Paleontologist, and Curator of the North Dakota State Fossil Collection! Dr. Boyd will talk about the dig projects, and what we learn from the fossils that are found there. We'll have a little time for Questions and Answers.

Our goals this year

North Dakota Geological Survey's paleontology program runs on a very frugal budget to maintain their research digs - they need basic tools for volunteers, they need scholarships to get high-schoolers out to the digs (and teach evolution)... and they have new opportunities for research this year!

In addition to the recurring needs for materials (plaster, glue, jacketing supplies) for the digs, fuel for transportation, there are costs for Lab processing supplies - drill bits cost $60 each!

Also, new to the budget are two interns - one field assistant who handles tasks at the dig sites (carrying supplies, digging, plastering, moving equipment, etc), and one lab assistant who helps to process the backlog of fossils brought back from digs every year. Each intern gets a stipend, but there is currently not enough budget to provide housing assistance. That is a gap the Museum would like very much to solve.

The staff are now hosting a credited teacher class in the summer - the teachers take a class at the museum and a tour, and then come out to a dig site. The Museum wants to help teachers with the fee charged by the University of North Dakota.

AND - a great new opportunity: the Museum will be getting a free boat from the NDGS Core Library, but they need a trailer and motor. There are many spots along the Missouri River that have fossils, and the Museum staff is excited to explore them. On the Zoom party, we'll talk about the Mosasaur vertebra found at the river!
[click here for more about the Mososaur recovered last October]

This year: I am aiming to raise $2,000 for the Program. I hope you will help me do that. I'm inviting several dozen people to this party, so even small donations for the Program will add up.

If you would like to join me in that, at whatever level you want, please let me know, or you can donate right now to the project at:

www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=6UZ37P59L84SA
(PayPal, debit or credit card)

You don't have to donate to be at the party, so please join me on Wednesday March **, 2024 at 7:30 pm EDT. I will send the Zoom link in another email soon. Please let me know if you think you can join, and if you have questions, please email, call, or text!

I will be adding more to this site, below, between now and the party on March 27th, to give you more of the back story, and photos from the digs.

So please come back!

Thanks,

Back to Bismarck site, July 2022

I was happy to return to the Bismarck dig site for four days, with a new group of volunteers. There were still many fossils to uncover, and prepare for moving back to the Lab.

See more on the "Back to Bismarck 2022" page.

Medora Dig, June 2021

When I could register for summer 2021, I decided to go in June because I was going to be running a summer program for teenagers (again) in Newton and couldn't be out of town in July. So I registered for the June dig in Medora, ND. I was not disappointed. It was a different location, and a different geologic time era, but the same great staff people.

Bismarck Dig, summer 2018

In late 2017, Alyce showed me an article about a program to go on paleontology digs in North Dakota. I flipped. As soon as I could register, I signed up and booked a flight to Bismarck for early August.

On the first day, I walked to the Heritage Museum parking lot and met Jeff Person, Becky Barnes, and a small group of staff and volunteers. After some orientation, we rode out to a private ranch, turned off to a dirt road and got out at the dig site. We were digging around bones, and learning from the staff members who were plastering and planning to get the bones out.
