This little dog would do anything for food--any food. Most of his life he was
20 lbs overweight--that's saying a lot for a 40 lb breed. Early on he learned to
open cupboard doors, and to leap from chair to counter top, where the really interesting
cupboards were. We rarely heard or saw him do this; he became lightning fast and
cunningly silent. Sebastian quickly learned that food bags crinkle, and crinkling
brought humans on the run. He learned to swipe chips and cookies by the merest corners
of their bags, and to quietly secret them outside where they could be devoured at
leisure. After stern talking-tos, timeouts, even newspaper beatings, he'd become
very, very sorry, all the while planning his next "attack." Nothing really
worked. After dozens of raids to the kitchen trash we installed child-proof latches.
For days he sat dejectedly outside the cupboard, whining and begging for someone
to undo this injustice.

Like many dogs, Sebastian buried his "treasures," though he had no earthly
idea himself why he did so. Give him a bone and he'd run off happily. Ten minutes
later, dirt on his nose, he'd be back, quite unaware of where his treat had gone
or why it wasn't with him. 'Bastian often buried unopened "finds," it was
a common thing to come home from work and search the corners of the yard for telltale
dirt mounds covering whole loaves of bread, full packages of bagels--even an unopened
pound of See's chocolates. The "dirt on the nose" was the give-away, and
Sebastian never "twigged" to it.
