Shamrock Sebastian (by Shamrock's Maxwell Smart, out of Shamrock Sheila of Jaden)
walked into our lives in March of 1992. The kids wanted an Akita, our friendly Akita
breeder suggested a Keeshond, we looked at a new brood and we were hooked. Told the
breeder we wanted a "family" not "show" dog and would take any
male, except for "that giant one" with the blue collar. We wanted a "smallish"
dog, and thought an average-sized Kees would be just about perfect. The breeder assured
us Kees didn't smell, weren't noisy, shed only once per year and had "boundless
energy." Right. The first and last promises came true enough, plus the "once
a year" was technically correct, I suppose. Considering he never STOPPED shedding
throughout his 10 years, technically he only shed once during his lifetime! Oh, we
got our "family" dog all right. Last of the litter and a total chunk, complete
with blue collar!

Sebastian, not because of any highbrow aspirations, nor even because Johann Sebastian
Bach and little Sebastian's ancestors shared the Low Countries' commonality, but
simply because the little dog entered our daughter's life the same summer that Disney's
The Little Mermaid did. The film's wisecracking crabby sidekick Sebastian's
name seemed a perfect fit for the dog. Thus little 'Bastian became our combination
court jester, enfant terrible and a not uncommon name for various Nintendo
adventurers and RPG heroes.

Just like the rest of our family, Sebastian loved the beach. Before he even saw
our home in San Francisco's East Bay, this dog went straight to Santa Cruz for a
day at the beach! He spent every July Fourth of his life in SC, and nearly always
made it into the surf. Never daunted, he also never learned not to bite the waves
or drink sea water.
