<h1>Plaster relief of the Clapp Pear first cultivated in Dorchester in the 1840’s at the Dorchester Historical Society, the former estate of William Clapp</h1>
<p>Upon discovering that the Dorchester Clapp pear was first grown only blocks away from Edward Everett Square, Laura Baring-Gould quickly saw the potential of the pear as a sculptural monument and community landmark. As the original pear was first cultivated from cross pollination of the sturdy Bartlett and sweet Flemish Beauty, the fruit was known for its tough skin but sweet interior. As such, Baring-Gould and the members of the Edward Everett Square Committee felt the artwork was a fitting metaphor for the reliance and generosity of Dorchester citizens.</p>
