The Edward Everett Square Project Committee is an all-volunteer group formed in 1995 from among three local civic associations (Annapolis Street, Eastman/Elder, and the John W. McCormack Civic Association) and the Dorchester Historical Society.

During the project’s “Pear phase”, 2003-2007, the committee consisted of John McColgan (Chair), Rich Tyson (Eastman/Elder), Armando Gaitan (McCormack), Ellen Berkland (Dorchester Historical Society) and Liz Carney (Dorchester Art Community). Together with Project Artist Laura Baring-Gould, this group managed the Clapp Pear art project with funding from the City of Boston Edward Ingersoll Browne Fund and sales from inscribed bricks.

Following the Clapp Pear sculpture dedication in June 2007 and personnel changes on the committee, the group took the name “Friends of Edward Everett Square” and successfully applied for further grant funding. With Dorchester Historical Society acting as non-profit fiscal agent the group managed the “bollard art” and landscaping phase with funding from the City of Boston Grassroots Open Space program and the Waste Management Corporation.

In early 2010 this group founded “Vision for Edward Everett Square, Inc.” (VEES), with responsibilities to “oversee the continued maintenance of the improvements to Edward Everett Square including, but not limited to, the installation of public art, landscaping, and other improvements and be responsible for ensuring the availability of resources to maintain both art and landscaping.”

Under the by-laws the board of directors of the new corporation, numbering no more than fifteen, shall consist of (a) neighborhood associations; (b) elected officials; and,(c) other interested citizens.

Acting board members include John McColgan (chair), Rich Tyson (Treasurer), Malana Gleason (Secretary), Earl Taylor (Dorchester Historical Society), Kevin Deabler (Columbia Savin Hill Civic Association), Gloria Vieira (Annapolis Street Neighborhood Association), Mike Manning (City Councilor Maureen Feeney’s Office) and William Christopher (Roche-Christopher Architecture).

VEES generally meets at 6:30 p.m. on the last Monday of the month from September through June at the Dorchester Historical Society headquarters, 195 Boston Street, Dorchester, MA 02125. Meetings are open to the public and anyone interested in becoming involved with the work of Edward Everett Square art, maintenance or educational programs is welcome.
