<p>Ralph Bagley, ABS Director of Information Services, chaired Session # 315- Managing Multivendor Projects. The objectives of the session were to identify methods for defining multivendor boundaries in IT projects and to describe effective communication tactics in multivendor environments.</p>
<h3>Abstract</h3>
<p>Technology projects are increasingly spanning across knowledge domains in the clinical enterprise. Often multi-vendor arrangements are needed to meet the business and technical requirements for providing Clinical Intelligence.</p>
<p>However, involving multiple vendors significantly increases the challenges and risks of implementing a successful IT project. Whether using multiple vendors in a chained phase implementation or engaging them to work simultaneously on converging paths, the planning and execution issues are highly complex. Two examples where multiple vendors are typically used are the integration of clinical applications using CDISC data standards and utilizing a Clinical Data Warehouse.</p>
<p>When using multiple vendors it is critical to have Request For Proposal (RFP), Project Management, and Validation approaches that clearly delineate vendor responsibilities. This includes identification of vendor roles by business and technical domain, definition of vendor activities to prevent internal resource constraints, assignment of technical functions by vendor, resolution of software and hardware performance, coordination of standalone and integration testing between users and vendors, validation between vendors, and multi-vendor support commitments. This becomes even more complex for global and offshore IT implementations.</p>
<p>This session will examine the following challenges:</p>
<ul><Li>Defining project scope and vendor boundaries</li>
<li>Generating RFPs with vendor selection</li>
<li>Effective communication from sponsor-to-vendors and vendor-to-vendor</li>
<Li>Exploring dynamics of mixed vendor teams</li>
<li>Organizing technology hand-offs between vendors</li>
<li>Managing competition between vendors</li>
<li>Assessing risk in mixed vendor environments</li>
<li>Coordinating internal, outsource, and offshore workforce</li>
<li>Resolving issues with non-technical stakeholders</li>
<li>Defining Service Level Agreements (SLA) in multi-vendor settings</li></ul>
