<h2>ISPOR 9th Annual European Congress</h2>
<p>The Health Economic Research and Quality of Life Evaluation Services (HERQuLES) team of Abt Associates made a number of important contributions to the ISPOR 9th Annual European Congress, conducted in Copenhagen, Denmark from October 28-31, 2006. These included six presentations, contributions to important "meetings within the meeting", and announcement of the partnership with Outcomes International, the European consultancy.</p>
<p>With respect to presentations, Dr. Won Chan Lee, Director of Health Economics, spoke on the following in the podium session on diabetes care: <strong>Insulin Therapy among Type 2 Diabetes Patients: Impact of Conversion to a Pen Device on Adherence, Hypoglycemic Events, and Costs</strong>. <p>Dr. Chris Pashos, Vice President and Executive Director of Health Economic Research and Quality of Life Evaluation Services (HERQuLES), chaired the ISPOR Institutional Council meeting in his capacity as the Council's incoming chairperson. Members of the HERQuLES team also participated in other special interest group meetings, focusing on a variety of topics including patient registries.</p>
<p>At the conference, Abt Associates formally announced creation of its worldwide partnership with Outcomes International, a leading independent consultancy based in Basel, Switzerland and Koln, Germany. Together, the partnership offers global expertise in health economics, outcomes research, patient registries, strategic consulting and market research services.</p>
<p>David Schwicker, Outcomes International's Managing Partner, made a presentation at the Patient Registry Special Interest Group session. He discussed the need for registries from the European perspective, citing evidence that regulatory and reimbursement authorities are increasingly requiring manufacturers to provide real-world data for reasons of safety monitoring, demonstrating effectiveness in actual clinical practice and showing that patients demonstrate good compliance and actually benefit from treatments in the long run. As these real-world data requirements can only be fulfilled in a prospective setting, the option of registries is becoming ever more attractive to marketers of innovative medical technologies in Europe that wish to ensure and retain registration and reimbursement of their products.</p>
