period of time starting with the end of middle school/beginning of high
school is one of the most exciting moments in a young person's life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>The promise of a new beginning can be exhilarating, the excitement
of a new challenge can be thrilling!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>Accompanying this new stage of life, however, are situations and
challenges which can stagger even the most mature and thoughtful young
person.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Youth must cope with
an avalanche of fresh hurdles including accelerated expectations;
increased stress; decisions to be made about involvement in a range of
destructive behaviors such as drugs and alcohol; and a host of other
issues that are all part of process of transitioning to this new life
stage.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Unfortunately, this
period is all too frequently marked by self-doubt, poor choices,
disruptions in relationships, and a decrease in self-esteem.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>Most disturbing is the fact that many of the thoughts and decisions
that youth will be making will have negative, long-term ramifications that
will translate into unhealthy lifestyles for the future. While we cannot
protect youth from all of life's difficulties --- in fact it is
developmentally critical that youth <i>"struggle"</i> with issues --- we must
provide greater support to assist youth in more comprehensively,
productively, and safely identifying and addressing<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">

not have such assistance can emerge from this period scarred and with a
diminished sense of self.<o:p>

Transitions Program, co-facilitated by the Needham Youth Commission and a
Guidance Counselor at each school (with a Guidance Counselor from Pollard
for 9th graders, and from Needham High School for 8th
graders, in attendance), consists of a two-part workshop; one at the
conclusion of 8th grade and one at the beginning of 9thgrade.
Working with students in groups of 20 - 25, the workshops will be highly
interactive and structured, and will include large group, small group, and
individual opportunities for learning. The program advocates identifying
issues (such as those noted above) prior to a crisis/incident so that
youth can make healthy choices and gain control over their lives.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>In addition to working directly with students, the Transitions
Program will address parents through the school PTC's and interact with
the print and electronic media to educate the public regarding the
critical nature of this period, the program itself, and the support
provided by the Needham Education Foundation.<o:p>

who cannot cope with the challenges of this stage of development increase
their risk for academic, social, and behavioral difficulties in school, as
well as difficulties at home. Youth who have the opportunity to voice
their issues, listen to others articulate their issues, and to discuss
areas of concern will engage in fewer and less severe acting out
behaviors, become more capable of continuing their educational endeavors,
and have the confidence to become happier, healthier, and more productive
people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>According to Social
Workers at Needham High School, this program will go a long way toward
meeting a growing need they have observed in students entering the 9th
grade. Lastly, this program is a recognition that the transition from
middle to high school, as the developmental stage, is a significant
experience and one in which all youth could benefit for additional
support.<o:p>
