issues of anger and
violence are not new to students; they live in a culture where
these topics are on constant parade.
Prior to graduation from elementary school, students will
witness on television alone 100,000 acts of violence.
When incidents of violence in movies, books, and video
games are included, this number rises substantially.
The fact that youth are bombarded with violent images is
alone cause for alarm. More
disturbing, however, is the fact that most youth have devoted
little to no time toward understanding the images they view, as
well as their own issues/feelings about anger and violence.
From early in their lives children hear and revel in
stories with violent themes; if it isn't the wicked step mother
abusing a child it's "the mean witch being shoved into the
oven" or it's "David slaying Goliath".
Additionally, the staggering number of violent acts
desensitizes children to the dangerous and frightening truths
about anger and violence. For
children to develop insight (and ultimately, appropriate
behaviors) regarding anger and violence, they must understand the
impact of media messages and learn effective methods of coping
with their own anger.<span style="mso-spacerun:

level to teach them anger/violence prevention and intervention
techniques; address school PTC's regarding the program and assist
parents in approaching the anger/violence issue with their
children; and collaborate with teachers in the involved schools
regarding the program and approach to the topic

the core of the program is the utilization of the visual model of
an Escalator, and students will chart how anger can escalate from
a benign situation to one which can spiral out of control.
The greatest strength of the program is the emphasis on the
ability of students to problem-solve how they can "get off
the escalator" to ensure safety and an appropriate closure. The SAVE Program advocates approaching the issues of anger
and violence prior to a crisis/incident so that youth can be
assisted in channeling their anger in productive and healthy
manners. Students
will learn how to help themselves and their peers cope with anger
more competently. This
skill is particularly critical as students enter the middle school
and a period of adolescence when their abilities to understand and
cope with anger will be challenged.
Students who cannot cope with anger appropriately increase
their risk for academic, social, and behavioral difficulties in
school, as well as difficulties at home.
Classroom teachers will be encouraged to observe all
sessions and incorporate the philosophy and methods into other
segments of the school day. At
PTC meetings parents will learn about the SAVE Program and about
new skills to utilize in approaching and supporting their children
regarding this topic.
