is truly an exceptional place in which to live, raise a family, and

and appointed officials and salaried employees contribute greatly to
making Needham special, the reality is that it's the generosity of

this can be traced to hundreds of volunteers who willed this
community to achieve and advance.<o:p>

growing up in Needham have witnessed their parents, neighbors, and
teachers volunteer their time and skills.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>They have seen ideas become reality, and have seen the value
of donating their time and energy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>Youth are ready to make contributions to the town, and
Project VAN seeks to provide a healthy volunteer program for youth
13 to 17 so that they can continue the tradition of volunteering
that adults have modeled so well.<o:p>

VAN began during the summer of 1998 at six sites and has grown
larger since then.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>This
year, Project VAN will hold nine (9) volunteer days throughout the
summer months.<span style="mso-spacerun:
yes"> </span>A typical day would include an hour orientation session
including an explanation of the project and the value to the
community; interactive activities designed to promote a sense of
teamwork and common focus; actual work at the site; a group lunch;
and a closure session where youth can share their feelings regarding
their experience.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Project
sites have included the Needham Community Council, Avery Crossing, Wingate
at Needham, the Needham Free Public Library, Needham Council on
Aging, Charles River ARC and
Needham Town Hall. <o:p>
