<font face="Verdana" size="2">The Peer Tutor Program
matches High School students (�tutors�) with middle school and elementary
school age youth (�tutees�) who have demonstrated a need for academic
assistance or a need for support in developing successful study habits.
The goals of the program are to provide academic assistance with specific
problematic subjects and to create a supportive learning environment,
which enables the tutees to gain confidence and build self-esteem.<O:P>

<font face="Verdana" size="2">Tutors are required to
provide <b>one hour of tutoring each week</b> <b>throughout the academic
year</b>, except during school vacations. Tutors must be knowledgeable in
at least one subject area taught at the middle or elementary school level
as well as have the ability to relate to middle or elementary school age
youths. Tutors may be from any grade at the High School level, and are
eligible to obtain school credit through the community classroom program.

<font face="Verdana" size="2">High school students
interested in becoming a peer tutor need to complete a peer tutor
application form and attend a training program. Following successful
completion of the training program, the tutors will attend a meeting where
they will be introduced to a tutee and their parent. At this meeting, the
guidelines will be reviewed, a tutoring schedule will be arranged, and the
tutee and tutor will be asked to sign a contract.

required to complete weekly log sheets to record a <u>brief</u> summary of
subjects and concerns covered during each session. Tutors will meet every
other month with the Peer Tutor Coordinator to review the progress of the
tutoring sessions and discuss any concerns listed in the log sheets.<O:P>

students are required to bring specific work assignments or review
material to each tutoring session. It is important that the tutees
understand that their tutors are available to help with assignments but
are not there to do the work for them. While learning of this type is
much less structured than a typical classroom, tutees should understand
that the majority of the tutoring session should be focused on specific
work assignments.<O:P> </O:P>

the tutee come to the tutoring session prepared and ready to work, a great
deal can be accomplished. Students helping students can be a very
successful and fun way to learn. The end result will be better grades and
improved self-esteem for <u>both</u> the tutee and the tutor.
