Skating on outdoor ponds is a New
England tradition, but one that has changed over the years. Due to
milder winters, there are far fewer days available for skating in
natural ponds. The deeper the pond, the longer it takes to freeze
into a condition suitable for skating. Some families have chosen to
create backyard skating areas, which freeze faster due to their
short depths. Information on creating your own backyard skating
area can be found in a Natick residents book, Home Ice: Reflections
on Backyard Rinks and Frozen Ponds.

recommended thickness for ice skating on ponds is six inches of

emergency? Someone needs to call 911 immediately, providing a full
description of the emergency and location, so that the Fire
Department can respond quickly. The Fire Department annually trains
for ice emergencies, so it is often best to wait for their arrival,
and to not jeopardize anyone elses safety. While waiting for the
emergency team, if the ice surface seems solid from the sideline to
the victims area, the safety board can be removed from the red
sign. The friend should lay down on the ice, stretching his/her
arms forward and pushing the safety board out towards the victim. A
rope is attached for extension. Push the safety board forward,
until the victim can hold onto the board, and then using the rope,
start pulling back. It is important for the victim and rescuer to
stay flat on the surface, to spread out their weight along the ice
