<br>
FrontPage makes it easy--perhaps too easy--to resample a picture after you
resize it. Just click the Resample button on the Pictures toolbar, and FrontPage
creates a slimmed-down version of the image that's optimized for its current
size. You shouldn't resample original copies of pictures, however, since there's
no way to go back later and retrieve the original version for use at larger
sizes. Instead, keep the originals somewhere else on your hard drive and work on
the copies you've imported into your Web site.</span></p>

<a name="Changing the labels on Web-page maps (FrontPage 2002/2003)">Changing the
labels on Web-page maps (FrontPage 2002/2003)</a></b><br>
<br>
In a previous tip, we explained how to generate maps in FrontPage. In FrontPage
2003, you can easily customize the labels that appear on your maps. On the page
of the Insert A Map
Properties wizard that displays a preview of your map, select the
current label in the single text box and make any changes you
want. (The label appears to be selected initially, but you can't
type over it until you select it by hand.) Click Preview to
update the preview version of the map.<br>
<br>
Things are a little more complicated in FrontPage 2002 because
you have to make the changes in HTML mode. In that mode, look for<br>
the original address near the end of a very long line of code. It
will look something like this:<br>
<br>
1600+Pennsylvania+Ave+NW%2C+%0D%0AWashington%2C+DC%2C+20006<br>
<br>
Replace this text with the text you prefer, replacing each space
with a plus sign, each comma with %2C, and each line break with %0D%0A.<br>
<br>
When you leave HTML mode, FrontPage warns you that the component
will be overwritten, but you can ignore that warning. Be aware,
however, that FrontPage will overwrite your label if you
double-click on the component in Normal mode and change any<br>
wizard settings.<br>
<br>
Similarly, you can change the onscreen text that appears when
you create a text link to a map instead of a static map. In this<br>
case, the address is exposed as ordinary text in HTML mode--just
before the &lt;/a&gt; tag--making the change much easier.</span></p>

<br>
Using Cascading Style Sheets, you can add a true watermark image
to the background of a page, one that neither tiles across the
page nor moves when the page is scrolled. To get started,
right-click on your page and choose Page Properties from the
shortcut menu. On the General tab in FrontPage 2000 or 2002,
click the Style button; in FrontPage 2003, switch to the Advanced
tab and click Body Style. Then, in the Style dialog box that
appears, click Format and choose Border.<br>
<br>
When the Borders And Shading dialog box appears, switch to the
Shading tab. Click Browse, navigate to the picture you want to
use, and click Open (OK in FrontPage 2000). Choose Center from
the Vertical Position and Horizontal Position dropdown lists,
No-repeat from the Repeat list, and Fixed from the Attachment
list. Click OK three times to close all the open dialog boxes.<br>

FrontPage's Drawing toolbar lets you add AutoShapes, WordArt,
and other graphic elements to your pages. These pictures aren't
in GIF or JPEG format, however; they're rendered on the fly
using VML (Vector Markup Language).<br>
<br>
Not all browsers support VML, so FrontPage includes a feature
that automatically creates alternate images in GIF format. To
enable this feature, choose Page Options from the Tools menu,
switch to the Compatibility tab (Authoring in FrontPage 2003),
select the Downlevel Image File check box, and click OK.<br>

<br>
As add-ins (third-party enhancements to FrontPage) became
increasingly popular a couple of years ago, Microsoft created the
FrontPage Add-in Center to help users find, rate, and download
them. At <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/downloads/addin">
http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/downloads/addin</a>,you
can find dozens of add-ins, as well as FrontPage themes and site
templates. In each case, you'll see which versions an add-in
works with, a contact email address, and a rating provided by
other users.<br>

<br>
In FrontPage, you can control the length of form data with field
validation. This is especially useful when a field should contain
data of a fixed length. Let's say, for example, that you've
created a form in which people should enter a five-digit ID
number. Right-click on this ID field and choose Form Field
Properties to access the Text Box Properties dialog box. Then,
click Validate to open the Text Box Validation dialog box. Type
ID Number in the Display Name text box; FrontPage will use this
name in error messages. Then, in the Data Length section, choose
the Required check box and type 5 in both the Min Length and MaxLength text boxes. Click OK twice to close the open dialog boxes.<br>

If you use FrontPage 2000 or later, you can keep your
installation updated with a quick visit to the Microsoft Web
site. Just point your browser to
<a href="http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate">http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate</a> and click on the Check
For Updates hyperlink. (In FrontPage 2003, you can also choose
Check For Updates from the Help menu.)<br>
<br>
When you do, an ActiveX control called the Office Update
Installation Engine scans your computer--without transmitting any
user-identifiable information to Microsoft--and alerts you about
any updates that are available.<br>

<br>
In a previous tip, we explained how to use validation to require
visitors to enter data of a specified length in form fields. If
you're going to use validation in this manner, you should also
size your form fields to fit the length of the expected data. (In
fact, you should do this anytime you expect data to conform to a
certain length.) To do so, right-click on the field and choose
Form Field Properties from the shortcut menu. In the Width In
Characters text box, enter the desired width for the field (in
characters). Note that this technique doesn't limit input to the
specified number of characters. Instead, it provides a visual cue
to the visitor.<br>

<br>
FrontPage's themes are professionally designed, but that doesn't
mean you can't make them better--or at least make them better fit<br>
your needs. To that end, the program includes built-in editing
features. To edit a theme in FrontPage 2000 or 2002, choose Theme<br>
from the Format menu, select the theme from the list on the left
side of the Themes dialog box, and click the Modify button at the<br>
bottom. In FrontPage 2003's Theme task pane, click the down arrow
button on the right side of the theme's thumbnail image (this<br>

<b><a name="Place graphic elements on a drawing canvas (FrontPage 2002/2003)">Place graphic elements on a drawing canvas (FrontPage 2002/2003)</a></b><br>
<br>
Before you draw elaborate pictures with the tools on FrontPage's
Drawing toolbar, you should first create a drawing canvas. This
is a defined region in which you can place several AutoShapes,
WordArt pictures, and other graphics. Doing so keeps all your
graphic elements together and lets you easily position them on
the page.<br>
<br>
To add a drawing canvas, choose Insert | Picture | New Drawing.
Initially, your drawing canvas measures 480 by 288 pixels, but
you can resize it by dragging on a corner or edge. After you've
created the drawing canvas, you can draw AutoShapes and other
graphic elements within its boundaries.<br>

choosing the Import command, switch to Folders view and select

If you're part of a Web-site team, other people may be working
on your site at the same time as you are--and you may not always
see the results of their work in FrontPage. Similarly, pages you
save directly to the site from another program, such as Microsoft
Word, may not immediately appear in FrontPage. That's where the
Refresh command comes in. Pressing [F5] or choosing Refresh from
the View menu ensures that the current view (Folders view, for

<br>
You (or your coworkers) can save Microsoft Office documents
directly to your Web site by creating a network place or Web
folder. In Windows 2000 and XP, a network place is simply a
shortcut to a location on a network or the Internet; Windows 98
uses the term Web folder instead.<br>
<br>
In the Save As dialog box in Microsoft Word (or another
program), choose My Network Places or Web Folders in the My
Places bar. Then, click the Create New Folder button. At this
point in Windows 2000 and XP, the Add Network Place Wizard
appears. Click Next. Type the Web site's URL in the Location text
box and a descriptive name in the Shortcut Name text box. Click
Finish. You'll be prompted for your username and password. After
that, you'll be able to save your document.<br>
<br>
In Windows 98, the process is a little different. After you
click the Create New Folder button, the Add Web Folder dialog box
appears. In the single text box you see, type the site's URL;
then, click Next. You'll be prompted for your username and
password. Then, on the next screen, type a shortcut name and
click Finish. At this point, you can save the document.<br>

FrontPage lets you create three kinds of hotspots on image maps:

can move it by dragging it. You can also modify its shape by

<br>
If you review your site's server logs or online statistics, you
may be surprised to discover multiple occurrences of the 304
(not modified) error. Don't be alarmed, however. This really
isn't an error at all. It simply means that the requested page
hasn't been updated and that the Web browser should display
a cached version of the page instead.<br>
<br>
When a browser requests a page, the request may be conditional,
asking for the page to be sent only if it's been modified since
a given date. The server responds by sending the page if it's
been modified or the 304 response code if it hasn't. Either way,
the site visitor will see the page he requested, not an error
message.<br>

<br>
FrontPage 2002 and 2003 include Web components for making maps
of real-world locations, allowing you to drive traffic from the
Web to the streets. To get started, launch FrontPage and create a
new Web page. Then, choose Web Component from the Insert menu to<br>
open the Insert Web Component dialog box.<br>
<br>
If you're running FrontPage 2002, choose Expedia Components from
the Component Type list box; in FrontPage 2003, choose MSN
Mapping Components. At this point, the right list box changes to
display two options (which are named and ordered differently in
the two versions). One option creates an actual map, while the
other creates a text link to a map on the Expedia or MSN Web
site. (The procedure is the same whether you're creating a text
link or a map, although the end result is different.)<br>
<br>
In both versions, you can create maps to specific addresses or
to cities, countries, or even natural features, such as mountain ranges.<br>

If your site is hosted on a non-Microsoft server, you can easily change the
password you use to access your site. To do so, open the live version of the
site and then choose Tools | Server | Change Password. In FrontPage 2002 and
2003, launch your browser and open a special configuration page. Enter your
username and old and new passwords (the latter twice) and click Change to
confirm your new password. Choosing the Change Password command in FrontPage
2000 brings up the Change Password dialog box. Enter your old and new passwords
(again, the latter twice) and click OK. If you host your site on a Windows
server, you'll have to check with your hosting company for more information.
Many hosts provide an online control panel where you can change your password.</span></p>

<br>
If you use FrontPage at work, at an Internet cafe, or anywhere else where your
PC is accessible to other people, you should take a couple of simple steps to
protect your Web site.<br>
<br>
The first is to decline FrontPage's offer to remember your password. Each time
you log on to your site, FrontPage asks whether you want it to remember your
password the next time you log on. To turn off this feature, deselect the
Remember My Password check box before you click OK. (FrontPage 2000 doesn't
offer the password-remembering feature.)<br>
<br>
Second, whenever you finish working on your site, you should exit from
FrontPage. If you simply close the site but leave FrontPage open, unauthorized
users can reopen the site without having to enter a password.</span><span style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; font-face: Courier New"><br>

Controlling the appearance of the task pane on startup (FrontPage 2002/2003)</a></b><br>
<br>
In FrontPage 2002, Microsoft introduced the concept of a task pane, a window
within the FrontPage window that provides easy access to commonly used commands.
By default, the New Page Or Web task pane appears each time you launch FrontPage
2002, while the Getting Started task pane appears in FrontPage 2003. Both
versions allow you to suppress the task pane on startup, however. To do so,
choose Options from the Tools menu to access the<br>
Options dialog box. Then, deselect the Startup Task Pane check box and click OK.<br>
<br>
In FrontPage 2002, you can also deselect the Show At Startup check box at the
bottom of the task pane when its visible. This has the same effect as changing
the dialog box setting.</p>
