are having a party for our volunteers on April 10th from 6pm - 8pm in the
Selectmen's Office at the Needham Town Hall. All VMC members are welcome
to come and meet their health department personnel and fellow volunteers,
pick up their MRC Supply Kits, see the new Health Department Trailer, and
take a picture for their VMC badge. Finger foods will be provided. We will
also be updating our Volunteer information so please bring your Driver's
License with you and be prepareded to let us know if you would like to
respond to emergencies that are local, regional or both?.

<LI>The Needham Health Department was awarded a $1,000
Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) grant to purchase
emergency supplies for the Department and MRC Volunteers.
<LI>The Needham Health Department was awarded a $8,400
Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) Grant to hire an
Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, Bryan Eustis, who has been
with us on and off for over 3 years.</LI></UL></UL></UL>
<LI>The Needham Health Department is concluding a $10,000 Metro West
Health Care Foundation Grant that was used to fund one additional day of
Emergency Preparedness work each week by the Needham Public Health
Nurse. The Needham Health Department is requesting the Town Manager,
Finance Committee, and Town Meeting to add this extra day to the Health
Department budget next year.
<LI>The Needham Health Department has begun performing presentations on
the VMC program to service clubs throughout Needham in the hopes of
increasing our base of Non-medical volunteers, especially those with
secondary language capability.
<LI>The newly formed Needham VMC Advisory Committee has met twice since
our last newsletter to discuss the current organization of the Corps and
to give input in the upcoming year's direction.
<LI>Needham has recently purchased an Automated Notification System that
would allow for information to be rapidly transmitted to Needham
residents during an emergency. This system will be rolled out soon
by Public Safety once they begin the process of registering the phone
numbers of Needham residents.

the 4b Subregion 3 VMC comprised of the seven towns of Canton,
Dedham, Milton, Needham, Norwood, Wellesley, and Westwood. We are proud to
announce that our application for national recognition as a Medical
Reserve Corps (MRC) unit was approved last month. This makes our VMC
unit available to continue to write grants and perform projects together.
Since being recognized as an MRC unit, the 4b Subregion 3 VMC has already
written one grant in the hopes of securing funds to hire a part-time
coordinator that would help build upon the tremendous success of the

The Needham VMC is also a part of the 4b Medical Reserve Corps
(MRC) which is comprised of the 27 cities and towns surrounding
Boston. As a member of the 4b MRC, the Needham VMC receives additional
training opportunities, emergency supplies, and State guidance. </P>
<P>We are also proud to announce that Emergency Preparedness Region 4b
will be nationally recognized by the National Association of City and
County Health Officials as being "Project Public Health Ready" at the
upcoming conference in Washington DC this month (Needham was recognized as
a town in 2004). To achieve the 5-year recognition, Region 4b had to
submit an extensive application including their regional emergency
response plan, workforce competency, and training plan which were compiled
over the past two years. 4b is one of only 4 regional sites in the United
States to be recognized out of many more that applied this
year and Region 4b joins Boston, Needham, and Wellesley as
the only areas in Massachusetts that are "Public Health
Ready".</P></FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD
