		across the Commonwealth will hold low-cost rabies vaccination clinics on 
		Saturday, April 7<sup>th</sup> as part of the Eighth Annual 
		Massachusetts Rabies Vaccination Day.&nbsp; The Massachusetts Department of 
		Agricultural Resources� Division of Animal Health started this program 
		to raise awareness of rabies and increase compliance with state 
		vaccination laws.&nbsp; All dogs, cats and ferrets living in Massachusetts 
		are required by law to be vaccinated against rabies.</span></font></p>

		encouraged to bring their family pets to get vaccinated against rabies 
		at the local veterinarians listed below.&nbsp; The cost of the vaccination

		the State Laboratory Institute (SLI) for rabies testing. Of these 
		specimens, 232 tested positive for rabies.&nbsp; Skunks and raccoons 
		accounted for 75% of all positive animals. The percentage of raccoons 
		testing positive has increased since 2004. Enhanced surveillance of 
		raccoons continued in Cape Cod throughout 2006. However, the rabies 
		virus diminished the raccoon and skunk populations on Cape Cod leading 
		to fewer submissions in 2006.</font></p>
		<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1px 5px" align="justify">
		<font face="Verdana" size="1">&nbsp;</font></p>
		<p class="MsoBodyText" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
		<font face="Verdana" size="1">Domestic animals and livestock are of 
		significant concern because they can serve as the bridge between rabies 
		in wild animals and humans. From September 1992, when raccoon rabies 
		entered Massachusetts, through December 2002, 104 cats, 14 cattle, 5 
		dogs, 3 horses and 3 pigs have tested positive for rabies in the state. 
		After a domestic animal (dog, cat or ferret) or cattle bites or 
		scratches a person, these animals (for which there are scientific 
		studies on shedding time of the rabies virus), regardless of their 
		vaccination status, should be quarantined for ten days if they are 
		healthy and available. Rabies vaccinations in domestic animals and 
		livestock are not 100% effective, and rare cases of vaccinated domestic 
		animals and livestock developing rabies have occurred, so these animals 
		need to be quarantined just like unvaccinated ones. If the animal is 
		healthy at the end of the ten-day quarantine period, post-exposure 
		prophylaxis is not recommended. If the animal exhibits signs of rabies 
		or dies within the ten-day quarantine period, it may be necessary to 
		initiate post-exposure prophylaxis.</font></p>
