		Health Department, so that we may place the order with the manufacturer.</font></span><!--mstheme--></font></h2>

      decisions are being made.&nbsp; Graduation parties are being planned.&nbsp; As the 
      excitement builds, the Needham Health Department wants to encourage 
      Needham�s seniors to remember to take one more thing with them this fall � 
      immunity to meningococcal meningitis. </font></p>
      <p class="MsoBodyText2" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Students graduating from Needham High School 
      will be receiving information about&nbsp;&nbsp; meningococcal meningitis vaccination 
      soon.&nbsp; The Needham Health Department will offer Meningococcal Vaccine for 
      Needham High School seniors entering college in the fall.&nbsp; The cost of the 
      vaccine is $90.00. A check made out to the Town of Needham, must be 
      received by the Needham Health Department by June 3<sup>rd</sup>, 2005,so 
      we can place an order with the manufacturer. </font></p>

      <p class="MsoBodyText3" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Effective August 2005, new legislation 
      requires meningococcal vaccine for students at secondary and post 
      secondary schools which provide or license housing.</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Every year, approximately 2600 people get 
      meningococcal disease in the United States, and roughly 10-15% of these 
      people die, in spite of treatment with antibiotics.&nbsp; Of those who live, 
      another 10% lose their arms or legs, become deaf, have problems with their 
      nervous systems, become mentally retarded, or suffer seizures or strokes.</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Meningococcal meningitis is a rare, but 
      potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause severe swelling of 
      the fluid around the brain and spinal cord, or serous blood infection 
      known as meningococcemia.&nbsp; Meningococcal meningitis is a form of bacterial 
      meningitis caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis.&nbsp; This bacterium 
      is spread through coughing, sneezing, kissing, or shared items such as 
      drinking glasses, utensils, or cigarettes. </font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Signs and symptoms of meningitis, which may 
      resemble the flu, progress rapidly.&nbsp; They include a sudden onset of a high 
      fever, a stiff neck, headache, nausea, vomiting, and/or mental confusion.&nbsp; 
      Changes in behavior such as confusion, sleepiness, and being hard to wake 
      up are important symptoms of this illness.&nbsp; A rash may be present, often 
      involving the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.&nbsp; Anyone, 
      having these symptoms, needs to contact their doctor immediately.&nbsp; In 
      addition, anyone observing these symptoms in a fellow student, must 
      contact a health care professional right away. </font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Cases of meningococcal meningitis among 
      adolescents and young adults, ages 15 to 24, have increased in the last 10 
      years.&nbsp; As many as 80% of all cases of meningococcal meningitis in college 
      students are vaccine preventable.&nbsp; The vaccine is safe and effective, and 
      can protect individuals against four of the five most common serogroups of 
      Neisseria meningitides, the bacteria that causes meningococcal meningitis 
      � A, C, Y, and W-135.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">College freshmen, especially those living in 
      dormitories, are shown, by CDC studies, to be at increased risk for 
      developing meningoccoccal meningitis compared to other persons in the same 
      age group.&nbsp; Certain social behaviors such as drinking, smoking, and being 
      in crowded situations like a dormitory, may put college students at this 
      greater risk.&nbsp; Massachusettes colleges are now requiring entering students 
      be vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis.&nbsp; Both the Advisory 
      Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease 
      control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 
      recommend that college students, especially those living in dormitories, 
      be educated about meningitis and the benefits of vaccination. </font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>
      <p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
      <font face="Verdana" size="2">Although it is still early Spring, 
      graduation will be here before you know it.&nbsp; Take this opportunity to have 
      your college-bound student immunized against meningococcal meningitis.&nbsp;
