Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States.
Everyone is at risk. It is estimated that over 3 million Americans have
Glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. Approximately 120,000
people are blind from Glaucoma, accounting for 9% -12% of all cases of
blindness in the United States. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of
blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1 5"><font face="Verdana" size="1">

Glaucoma happens when nerve tissue in the eye is damaged, usually by
high eye pressure. It causes a gradual loss of peripheral, or side,
vision. There are usually no symptoms. In the early stages, vision is
normal, and there is no pain. By the time people notice they have lost
some of their side vision, glaucoma has already removed a lot of sight.
Even so, objects directly in front of your eyes may still be seen
clearly. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1 5"><font face="Verdana" size="1">

Once detected, it can be stopped in most cases. Vision lost to glaucoma
cannot be restored. The sooner it is detected, the more vision can be
saved. The most common signs and symptoms include frequent changes of
glasses that do not seem to help, loss of side vision, inability to
adjust eyes to darkened rooms, and blurred or foggy vision, especially
on awakening.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1 5"><font face="Verdana" size="1">

The most common treatment is prescription eye drops. Some people need a
combination of oral drugs and eye drops, and some people may require
surgery. If your eye doctor gives you medicine for glaucoma, take it
every day.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1 5"><font face="Verdana" size="1">

People of any race who are over the age of 40 years old are at risk for
glaucoma. High-risk individuals include people over 60 years of age,
people with a family history of glaucoma, diabetics, and people who are
severely nearsighted. African Americans ages 45-65 are 14 to 17 times
more likely to go blind from Glaucoma than Caucasians with Glaucoma in
the same age group. People who are at risk are advised to have a dilated
eye exam every two years. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1 5"><font face="Verdana" size="1">

So, be pro active with the health of your eyes. See your eye doctor
