<font face="Verdana" size="2">According to the Massachusetts Department of
Public Health, injuries are not "accidents" they are predictable and
preventable events! An injury is defined as any unintentional or intentional
damage to the body resulting from acute exposure to thermal, mechanical,
electrical, or chemical energy or from the absence of such elements as heat or
oxygen. In Massachusetts, motor vehicle-related crashes are a leading cause of
death and injury to Massachusetts residents. Many of these injuries occur
because seat belts and child safety restraints are not being used or are being
used improperly.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:1 5; ">
<font face="Verdana" size="2"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:1 5; ">
<font face="Verdana" size="2">Current Massachusetts law requires children up to
age five or forty pounds to be in a child passenger restraint while riding in a
motor vehicle. From age five through age twelve, only an adult safety belt is
required. The law suggests that this practice is safe, but the statistics prove
otherwise. It does not seem reasonable that a seat belt would accommodate all
comers from 40 pounds to 240 pounds, and from four feet tall to six foot four.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:1 5; ">
<font face="Verdana" size="2"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:1 5; ">
<font face="Verdana" size="2">According to the National Highway Safety
Administration, 428 children ages 5-9 were killed in motor vehicle crashes in
2001. Of these, 203 were unrestrained, and 183 were too small for the
adult safety belts that were in use. In the children that were 6-7 years
of age, 94 of them dies while restrained in an adult seat belt and 85 were
killed while unrestrained. Only one American child that year was known to
have been killed while secured in a booster seat. In addition, 57,000
children in this age group were injured despite wearing seat belts.
According to a Partners for Child Passenger Safety study from Childrens
Hospital of Philadelphia in 2000, Children too small for adult seat belts have
a 350 percent greater chance of significant injury and a 420 percent greater
chance of head injury. Eight-three percent
of children from the ages 4 through 8 are inappropriately restrained in adult
seat belts. </font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:1 5; ">
<font face="Verdana" size="2">We have improved the safety of the passenger
vehicle in this country. We are all familiar with the crash test data and many
of us purchase our cars with safety in mind. But in order for this improved
safety to be translated into lives saved for our children, we must be aware of
the need for an additional period for adaptive restraint for our children not
quite grown enough to effectively and safely utilize the adult seat belt
restraint.</font></p>

<font size="2">This article serves as a gentle reminder to consider the use of a
booster seat for the child not quite large enough to be safe otherwise. There
is no law in Massachusetts requiring the booster seat, but it is in the spirit
of promoting the safety and well being of our smallest citizens that we suggest
that parents investigate the use of booster seats. Consult your pediatricians,
look it up on the web, and make an informed decision. Although there are many
sites on the web, a few that were helpful are;
