to find a bat flying over your head or observed bats in and around your
property? Or have you accidentally let your dog or cat rabies
vaccinations lapse? If so, you may be at risk for contracting rabies,
and the following information will be very helpful for you to know.</font></p>

<font face="Verdana" size="1">Rabies is a frightening disease in people
because it always causes death. Rabies in humans is very rare in the
U.S., but rabies in certain animals � especially wildlife � is common in
many parts of the country. <u>And almost all of the human cases in this
country over the past twenty years have been caused by bats.</u> </font>
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="1"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="1">Possible exposures to bats must be carefully
evaluated. Bat bites tend to go unnoticed and may be mistaken for an
insect bite or sting. Since their teeth and claws are so small, a bite
may not bleed or even hurt. Bats captured following a potential human
exposure should never be released, but should be submitted to the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health State Laboratory Institute for
rabies testing. Post-exposure treatment should be given in any situation
where a bat is physically present and a bite, or other exposure/contact,
cannot be ruled out. In fact, people sleeping in the same room where a
bat is found, or children who have been alone in a room with a bat, should
see a doctor <u>immediately</u>. </font></p>

<font face="Verdana" size="1">If the bat is available and can be tested
promptly, post-exposure treatment may be postponed pending test results,
which usually takes 1-2 days. If possible, secure the bat in a room and
<span style="color:black">contact the Animal Control Officer at the
Needham Police Department. </span>DO NOT try to remove the bat. You need
to call a professional who is trained to do so, and they will also be able
to have the animal tested to confirm whether it has rabies. This will put
your mind at ease if the animal is found negative for rabies, and you will
not have to go through the required treatment. </font></p>

goal of public health is, first, to prevent human exposure to rabies by
education and, second, to prevent the disease by vaccination treatment
if exposure occurs. Tens of thousands of people are successfully
vaccinated each year after being bitten by an animal that may have
rabies. A few people die of rabies each year in the United States,
usually because they do not recognize the risk of rabies from the bite
of a wild animal and do not seek medical advice.</font><!--mstheme--></font><!--msthemelist--></td></tr>

rabies. There are currently 11 different strains of the rabies affecting
the United States. A "strain" of rabies is a form of the virus which is
primarily carried by a specific animal, known as the dominant reservoir
species. Of the 11 strains of rabies in the U. S., 6 are carried by
bats, which are found in all parts of the U.S. Land animals carry the
remaining 5 strains. These strains include 2 fox strains, 2 skunk

animals with rabies (rabid animals). Any wild mammal, like a raccoon,
skunk, fox, coyote, or bat, can have rabies and transmit it to people.
It is also possible, but rare, that people may get rabies if infectious
material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, gets directly into their
eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound.</font><!--mstheme--></font><!--msthemelist--></td></tr>

other domestic animals) is required by law, and though this will not
necessarily affect the spread of the virus through the wildlife
population, it can insure that your pets will not act between rabies in
the wild and yourself. If you think your pet or domestic animal has
been bitten by a bat, contact a veterinarian or your health department
for assistance immediately and have the bat tested for rabies. </font>
