<font face="Verdana" size="2">As the holiday season approaches, it is
important to pause and reflect on an illness that has touched so many in
this country and the world. December 1st was World AIDS Day. Since 1981,
more than 20 million people have died of AIDS, according to The Hopkins
HIV Report, 2002. In addition, it is estimated that 40 million people
were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2001, including 3 million
children. Another 5 million people became infected with the HIV virus
that causes AIDS in 2001, and it is estimated that over 3 million AIDS
deaths occurred in 2001. According to Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director
of UNAIDS, these numbers provide positive proof that HIV, if left to run
its natural course, will cause devastation on an unprecedented scale.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="2"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="2">The theme of this year�s World AIDS Day
observance was �Stigma and Discrimination.� It is believed that fear of
discrimination interferes with people seeking diagnosis and treatment of
HIV. Because of the stigma associated with the AIDS virus, individuals
with the illness are often reluctant to share this information with family
members, friends, employers, or health care professionals. The wall of
silence surrounding this disease further isolates those in need of help.
It also propagates the myth that this is an illness involving only a
certain subset of individuals. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="2"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="2">Although the data shows that the incidence
of AIDS (the number of new cases diagnosed during a given time period,
usually a year) is declining, the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases,
among youth, has not had a comparable decline. According to the American
Journal of Public Health, persons living with AIDS during 1999 were much
more likely to be female, African American, or infected through
heterosexual contact�than were people living with AIDS in 1990. In 1999,
according to Center for Disease Control statistics, HIV, the virus that
causes AIDS, was the fifth leading cause of death for Americans between
the ages of 25 and 44. It is estimated that at least 50% of all new
cases of HIV infection, in the United States, are among people under age
25.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="2"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1 5">
<font face="Verdana" size="2">Although treatment exists for AIDS,
prevention is essential if the decimation of yet another generation is to
be avoided. Education continues to be the starting point in AIDS
prevention. Acknowledging that this is an illness that affects our
families, our neighbors, and our world, may make living with this illness
just a little bit easier.</font></p>
