<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">Many of us know that
the word yoga means union of body and mind. Not as many realize the
strong and intimate connection between nutrition and our health,
especially oral health. </span></p>
<p style="margin: 1 5"> </p>
<p style="margin: 1 5">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">Numerous studies
have shown that malnutrition weakens the immune system. This means that
our bodies become more prone to infections of all kinds. As a practicing
dentist, I witness the presence of the two most common infections
affecting mankind: dental decay and periodontal disease. Tooth decay is 5
times as common in children as asthma. More than 55% of American adults
have some degree of periodontal disease.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 1 5"> </p>
<p style="margin: 1 5">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">Poor nutrition is a
direct cause of these oral diseases, as well as a factor that will
continue to advance them. Naturally, our teeth and gums are essential for
the intake of proper nutrition, so that as the dentition deteriorates, we
tend to choose processed, easy-to-chew foods. Processed foods contain less
nutritional value, less fiber and more sugar than whole foods. The
addition of sugar to many of our foods is on the rise. So are the national
rates of dental decay, gum disease, obesity and diabetes. Beverages and
carbohydrate snacks make up the largest source of additional sugars
consumed daily. By the age of 1, nearly 90% of all infants are drinking
fruit juice. Processed fruit juice is not a substitute for fruit and has
less nutritional value. The presence of phosphoric acid in soft drinks
helps to "dissolve" teeth and bones.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 1 5"> </p>
<p style="margin: 1 5">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">Why is it so
important to eat right? Well, what happens is this: Infections and injury
activate your immune system. Important nutrients are brought to the
fighting cells to strengthen them. Damaged tissues are repaired and
further damage is suppressed. When there is a lack of the right
nutrients, the proper antibodies cannot be released and the infecting
bacteria or viruses reproduce more quickly and actually get better at
binding to your cells.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 1 5"> </p>
<p style="margin: 1 5">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">So, what are the
right nutrients for a healthy mouth and also healthy body? Limit the
frequency of refined sugars and carbohydrates. Sugars are fermentable and
when they "sit" on your teeth and gums, they contribute to decay and
gingivitis (gum inflammation). Whole grains do not seem to possess the
same cariogenic (decay causing) potential. For gingival health, get
adequate supplies of vitamins C, A and D, copper, zinc, calcium and
phosphorus, and folic acid.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 1 5">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana"> </span></p>
<p style="margin: 1 5">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">In summary, if you
eat right, your mouth will be healthy, allowing you to enjoy eating. That
way you can enjoy an occasional treat. Notice the key word is enjoy.
Healthy foods create happy bodies. And as the yogis say, a happy body
means a healthy mind, therefore happy and healthy lives.</span></p>
