a wonderful opportunity for families to take some time to review their
activities from the previous year, and make decisions on how to move forward
towards a healthier, fit family unit. The following information is a short
guide to help your family in its review.</p>

<p class="MsoBodyText" style="margin:1 5; ">According to the
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted by the Centers for
Disease Control, the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has
doubled since the 1960�s. A high percentage of these children will remain
overweight as adults. Links have been made between overweight people having an
increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, decreased bone
density, some types of cancer, arthritis, and other health problems. </p>

what can your family do to reduce the risks, and move towards being healthier

choices made each day. Are parents setting a good example for children to
follow? Research shows that children will develop eating habits similar to
those of their parents. Your family doctor or a certified nutritionist can
offer suggestions to create a balanced diet, with the appropriate amount of
nutrients for each age group. Don�t forget breakfast, an important start to
every day!</p>

at the amount of physical activity each person in the family participates in
each day. Are the adults spending most of their day sitting at desks? Are they
getting into a car and driving to/from work or driving members of the family to
scheduled activities? Are children spending time sitting in school, in family
vehicles, participating in activities that don�t encourage physical movement?

Physical exercise can keep the heart and lungs healthier, can strengthen bones,
and decrease illness. Strong, flexible muscles are developed through exercise.
Check with your doctor to know your limits, or to discover what needs more
work. Many local health clubs have fitness specialists on staff who can help
create a program for individual needs. Adults can find simple ways to add
exercise throughout their days, without spending money, too! Instead of taking
an elevator, choose to take the stairs. Rather than parking close to the door,
choose to park farther away and walk. Invite other family members or friends to
walk or jog in the neighborhood, or explore a nearby park. Choose a theme walk:
look at different types of gardens along the route, find a new color combination
for your home, pick up loose change along your route. Walk to the library or
store � the items you pick up can be part of your �weight training!� </p>

<p class="MsoBodyText" align="left" style="margin:1 5; ">How
can children exercise? Through play! Children do not have to be signed up for
organized programs to get the benefit of exercise � they just need opportunities
to play in ways that move their body parts and help them breathe deeply. Your
home � inside and outside � has plenty of places for these activities to take
place in. While putting away toys, have young children take one toy at a time
to its shelf or toy box, choosing to hop, march, skip, or roll to their
destination. Older children can dance to their favorite music as they help with
chores. Have regular family fun days in New England, trying new activities �
take a ski lesson together at Blue Hills or walk the trails in the milder
weather; canoe along the Charles River or take kayaking lessons; walk the
Freedom Trail.</p>

scheduling is a detriment to being healthy and fit. Is one parent in the car
driving family members to so many organized activities that he/she doesn�t have
time to him/herself? Are younger children along for those car rides, reducing
their time for active play? Are fast food dinners easier to feed the family
than a simple meal at the family table? Are children registered for organized
activities in the belief that the more they participate in, the more successful
they will be in later life? </p>

<p class="MsoBodyText" style="margin:1 5; " align="left">It�s
time for the family to sit down and talk about schedules. What is working and
what isn�t working? Make a choice for what works for your family, today,
without worrying about success in college or beyond. The time spent together as
a family, and with friends, will provide the values needed for success. The
opportunities to share this time will become harder to find as the children get
older. Take the time to slow it down and spend time together. </p>
