<font face="Verdana" size="1">The lazy, hazy days of summer are almost
over and for many people that means no more excuses to make quick,
on-the-run dinners or grab takeout. Its back to cooking balanced meals
for many families. And its time to start thinking about how to make
your meals more heart healthy too.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1px 5px" align="justify">
<font face="Verdana" size="1">First, lets debunk some of the myths that
cause families to keep cooking high fat dinners. For starters, many
parents think that their children need extra fat while growing. Well, if
your children are under two, they do indeed need more fat than adults.
Their brains are composed chiefly of fat so the extra fat in their diet
has an important role. For children over two, they can and should
follow the same heart healthy eating guidelines as the rest of the
family. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1px 5px" align="justify">
<font face="Verdana" size="1"> </font></p>
<p class="MsoBodyTextIndent" align="justify" style="margin: 1px 5px">
<font face="Verdana" size="1">That leads us to the second myth: children
will only eat high fat, breaded and/or fried foods like chicken fingers
and French fries. While many young children, adolescents and teenagers
prefer breaded and fried foods, it is our job as parents to try a
variety of marinades and healthy seasonings to tempt them into trying
something new. Chicken or lean beef marinated in a light teriyaki sauce
often appeals to children. Likewise, chicken and fish can be lightly
breaded and broiled to mimic the look and taste of fried foods. Studies
show that children love finger foods, crunchy textures, and sauces for
dipping. So why not try serving a plate of raw or lightly steamed
vegetables in bite size pieces, along with a low fat creamy salad
dressing for dipping? To round off your meal, complex carbohydrates
like pasta, rice, or couscous can be served warm or in a cold salad with
salad dressing which adds additional flavor.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1px 5px" align="justify">

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 1px 5px" align="justify">
<font face="Verdana" size="1">For dessert, many parents have several
types of packaged cookies and full fat ice creams in the house. Better
choices include low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt, fig cookies,
homemade oatmeal cookies, or a colorful fruit salad. Fruit salad may
seem like a dieters choice but a creative, tasty combination of fresh
fruits is always well-received by children and adults of all ages. For
a special treat, layer pieces of fruit with a low fat whipped topping in
a pretty parfait glass. Or try making cakes that have rows of colorful
fruits like strawberries and blueberries for a garnish instead of
frosting. By going out for ice cream, you can keep the tempting high
fat treats out of the house, and build in some activity at the same
time. </font></p>

<font face="Verdana" size="1">The moral of the story is that healthy
foods can be tasty and attractive foods that the whole family will
enjoy. Just keep the snacks off the kitchen counters so everyone in the
family arrives at the dinner table with a good appetite. And be sure to
role model eating, and enjoying, all of the healthy foods you want your
family to eat. With a little extra effort, you can have your low fat
cake and eat it too. </font></p>
