Robert Stack

June 19, 2012 - 10:30 to 1:30

Want to break out of watercolor into a new medium? Got a "dead" watercolor you want to
bring back to life? In this course you will learn the basics of gouache (or opaque watercolor).
A medium used mostly in the graphic design field, Gouache differs from watercolor in that
the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert,
white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque,
with greater reflective qualities. Bring your watercolor supplies and some gouache if you have it. Also bring
a "dead" watercolor to work on.

      Robert Stack

July 10, 2012- 10:30AM-1:30pm

Want to try egg tempera? Egg tempera (a medium closely associated with the Brandywine Valley) is a permanent fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigment mixed with water-soluble egg yolk used in a style of semi-opaque painting. Tradition egg tempera can be technically complex to prepare so in this course participants will learn the basics of a simple method for creating egg tempera paintings using gouache paint. Participants should bring standard watercolor equipment (brushes, pallets, water containers). Egg tempera needs a rigid
surface so participants need to bring illustration or smooth mat board to paint on (or if they wish they can
bring Italian gesso panels but it is not necessary). Participants may also want to bring sketches or
other reference material they may wish to work from.
