<h2> Abstract </h2>
This paper provides a summary and discussion of the challenges and options of the GEO use of GPS based on recent experience gained from a study considering the  implementation of a GPS navigation package onboard a specific GEO satellite. Options of onboard ephemeris determination using GPS are discussed with the required antenna designs. The current most feasible option is the tracking of L1/L2 signals within the visible 7 deg annulus ring. Results of computer simulations indicate the feasibility of determining spacecraft position with an accuracy ranging from 20 to 50 m depending upon onboard hardware and software equipment. The most desirable option, from the user point of view, would be to extend the L-band coverage with an aft antenna on the back side of Block IIF GPS spacecraft for all the GEO and high altitude users.
