AAS 95-355

Non-Linear Dissipative Effects in Tethered Multilayer Systems for Space Missions

F. Angrilli, R. Da Forno and B. Saggin, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, University of Padova, Padova, ITALY

Abstract
This paper analyses the non-linear dissipative effects in tethered satellite systems in order to obtain an interpretative model of this complex phenomena due to the internal friction between the cable layers.

The model used describes the full non-linear three-dimensional behaviour of the tether connecting the end masses, such model is innovative with respect to actual ones and is based on the characteristics method.

Moreover introducing internal friction along the instantaneous tangent to the tether we obtain the hysteresis cycle. This allow to model the non-linear interaction between the external layer to the tether core:

By this model it is possible to simulate the interaction between external coating and internal core of the tether, not only in longitudinal motion, but also in three-dimensional transverse vibration.
