<font class="MainTitle">Demetrios G. Halkias, Ph.D.</font><br><br>
Dr. Halkias was born in Kosma and grew up in Leonidio, Greece. He came to the 
United States as a youth and graduated from the University of Illinois, then 
obtained his master's and doctorate degrees in medical microbiology from Loyola 
University's School of Medicine. He has taught pathology and medical microbiology 
at Creighton University and the University of South Florida. He has also served 
as chief of the microbiology section at the James A. Haley Veteran's Hospital in 
Tampa. Dr. Halkias has engaged in research, trained residents in pathology, published 
numerous papers and book chapters, and advised many graduate students. He has served 
on committees of USF and the VA, notably the admissions committee for the medical school. 
In addition he has been extremely active in the Greek Orthodox Church, serving for 
twenty-five years on the parish council of St. John's in Tampa. He helped to establish 
the Greek Studies Center at USF and is a founding member of The American Foundation 
for Greek Language and Culture. Dr. Halkias retired in 2000 and was given the status of Professor Emeritus.<br><br>
