<blockquote>The fourth educational Forum of the AFGLC was held at the University
of South Florida in Tampa on March 5th and 6th. Our annual Gala followed
on Saturday March 6th, 1999. The theme of the AFGLC Forum was entitled
"Creation and Support of the University-based Interdisciplinary Centers
of Hellenic Studies" (ICHS).&nbsp; The Forum focused on the deement velopment
of realistic plans and approaches for the support and/or enhancof educational
programs in&nbsp; Greek language and culture within the American University
structure. The format for the Forum included formal, brief presentations
by the participating speakers, followed by a roundtable discussion.</blockquote>
<b><i><font color="#FFFF00">Highlights</font></i></b></blockquote>

<blockquote>One of our keynote speakers was the U.S. Ambassador to Greece,
the Honorable Nicholas Burns, among other individuals from Greece and the
United States. At our annual black tie "AFGLC Gala Event '99" we honored
Mr. Emmanuel John Elliott. Dr. Constantinos Dallas Special Advisor to George
Papandreou, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Athens, Greece, announced the
financial support by the Greek Government, through the AFGLC, towards the
establishment of two&nbsp; academic positions in the ICHS at USF. This
was the happy successful ending of the fourth Annual Forum and Gala 1999
of the AFGLC.</blockquote>

<blockquote><b><i><font color="#FFFF00">Friday - March 5, 1999</font></i></b></blockquote>

<blockquote>The AFGLC Forum 99 started following the Invocation made by
His grace the Bishop lakovos of Catania. Ms Betty Castor, President of
the USF, brought her greetings from the University to the people attending
the Forum, followed by Prof. S. David Stamps Dean, College of Arts and
Sciences, at USF. A number of dignitaries and speakers from USA and Greece
followed her greetings, with speeches relevant to our Foundation and our
goal to establish the Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies. Prof.
Chris Tsokos, President of the AFGLC, made the Opening Remarks and talked
about "AFGLC and the ICHS Concept." Mr. Daniel Ruth, columnist of the Tampa
Tribune, talked about "Support of ICHS as a Center of Excellence at USF."
For the first theme of Forum 99, "ICHS Programs and Plans" moderator was
Prof. John Balis, Vice President of the AFGLC. The title of the next speech
was "Starting an ICHS at USF: Working from our Strengths" by Prof. William
Murray. Prof. Suzanne P. Murray Dep. of Humanities at USF, spoke about
"Local Resources for a program in Classical Greek and Archeology". The
speech of Prof. John Noonan, of the Dep. of Classics USF was based on "Teaching
Classical Greek at USF". Provost Nick Billiris, of the Tarpon Springs Center
St. Petersburg Junior College, referred to "Hellenism: The Tarpon Springs
Center at SPJC and the Potential for Cooperation with USF". Prof. James
Strange of the Dep. of Religious Studies, USF spoke about "Hellenism in
Israel and Jordan and USF's excavation in Sepphoris in Palestine". Prof.
Stephen V. Tracy Prof. Of Greek, Ohio State University spoke on "The American
School of Classical Studies: 118 years of Teaching Hellenism to American
University Students". The subject of Ms. Maria Daniels, Visual Collections
Curator, Tufts University, was on "Teaching Hellenism with the Perseus
Project Database:&nbsp; How it Might Work at USF". Prof. Nancy Wilkie,
President of the Archeological Institute of America, Dep. of Classics Carleton
College, referred to "One hundred years of Hellenism through Classical
Archeology". Moderator for the afternoon session, was Prof. Andreas Paloumpis,
President Emeritus of Hillsborough Community College. The following dignitaries
from Greece participated in this Forum and presented Topics of our Mother
Land, which impressed the audience. Ms Catherine Koumananou referred on
"The Importance of Hellenic Studies and the AFGLC."The speech of Prof.
George Roussas, Dean of the College of Arts&amp; Science, University of
California at Davis, was "In Support of the Interdisciplinary Centers of
Hellenic Studies." Prof. Agni Vlavianos-Arvanitis, President of the Biopolitics-Bioculture
spoke on "A new Renaissance Contribution to Hellenism." Dr. Fani-Maria
Tsigakou Curator of the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece urged the audience
on "Rediscovery of Greece". Active participants of the Round Table Discussions
included Prof. Aristotle Michopoulos, Ms. Sophia Metsakis-Laslo and Prof.
Ippokratis Kantzios. Prof. John Balis summarized the highlights of the
Friday's sessions.</blockquote>

<blockquote><b><i><font color="#FFFF00">Saturday - March 6, 1999</font></i></b>
<blockquote>"AFGLC and the Bonding&nbsp; beteween America and Greece: In
Preparation for the Next millennium" was the next day's cental theme. Prof.
Thomas J. Tighe, Provost and Executive Vice President USF, brought his
greetings to the Forum from the University. The American Ambassador to
Greece, Mr. Nicholas Burns, underlined in a brilliant speech the important
role that AFGLC may play in the relationship between Greece and USA. Next
dignitary was the Honorable Alexios G. Christopoulos, Minister Deputy Chief
of the Embassy of Greece to the United States. His speech was about 'The
Interdisciplinary Center of Hellenic Studies at USF and the AFGLC." He
was very impressive as a speaker as well as a diplomat. Both the American
Ambassador to Greece and the Greek Ambassador to USA came to Florida specifically
for the events of the AFGLC. During a Forum recess, the two Ambassadors
responded to questions imposed by the audience.&nbsp; The Honorable Mr.
Gus Bilirakis of the Florida House of Representatives brought "Greetings
from the State House". Next speaker was Mr. Chris Tomaras, President, Council
of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), North and South America, Chicago, Illinois. The
title of his inspiring speech was:&nbsp; "What Is Hellenism? The Diaspora
Perspective". Dr. Constantinos Dallas made an informative presentation
on the "New Perspectives for Greek Cultural Policy". Last of the dignitaries
who came from Greece especially for this event, was Ms Catherine Ferguson,
Grand President of the Daughters of Penelope USA; she spoke "On our Support
of AFGLC Aims and Objectives". At the end of the Forum, Prof. Chris Tsokos
summarized the "AFGLC Educational Forum '99- Conclusions". The same evening
on Saturday March 6th '99 the AFGLC had its fourth GALA at the HYATT Regency
Hotel in Tampa. The Person who was honored this year for his contribution
to the Greek Community was the philanthropist Mr. E.J. Elliott. Mr. Elliott
has been a valuable supporter of the AFGLC.</blockquote>
