<p><font size="+1"><b>Dr. John U. Balis</b></font> was born in Calamata, Greece
in 1932. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Athens, Greece
in 1957, and completed his education and training in the discipline of Anatomic
Pathology in the United States (1957-60) and Canada (1960-63).</p>
<p>Following several years of research experience as an Investigator at the
Research Institute Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, he joined the faculty
of the Department of Pathology, Loyola University of Chicago in 1966 and reaching
the rank of Professor in 1975.</p>
<p> During the past 22 years Dr. Balis has been Professor of Pathology at the
University of South Florida College of Medicine (USFCM), where he directs
the educational pathology program for medical students. In this capacity he
has received the Outstanding Preclinical Faculty Award for excellence in teaching
on five occasions; and in April 2000 he was recognized by the USFCM for Outstanding
Contribution in the Program in Undergraduate Medical Education.</p>
<p>He directed a multidisciplinary research program at both Loyola University
and USFCM, has published over 100 original research articles in the fields
of vascular and pulmonary pathobiology, and had been a consultant to the National
Institutes of Health as a regular and ad hoc member for many years. </p>
<p>In 1984 he became a founding member of the Greek Studies Center at the USF,
and during the past 10 years he has been the vice president of the AFGLC.</p>
He has been married to Dr. Bayzar Erkman-Balis since 1964; their son, Dr. Ulysses
J. Balis, is currently a member of the Department of Pathology faculty at the
Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. His son also serves as
the AFGLC webmaster and graphic artist.
