<p><font size="+1"><b>Demetrios G. Halkias</b></font> was born in 1932 in Kosma,
Kynourias, Greece to George and Kalliope Halkias. His father, a physician,
died in 1935 and Demetrios grew up as an orphan among his brother and two
sisters during the difficult years of the second World War. When the Germans
burned Kosma to the ground Demtrios moved to Leonidion where he finished his
high school education.</p>
<p>In 1950, he was admitted to the Superior School of Commerce and Economic
Sciences and in December 1951 migrated to the United States. He settled in
Chicago and started as dishwasher, laundry man, short order cook and attended
night school to learn the English Language.</p>
<p>In February 1953, he entered the University of Illinois graduated in 1957
and continued his graduate studies at the Stritch School of Medicine Loyola
University where he obtained a M.S. and a Ph.D. degree in Medical Microbiology.</p>
<p>In 1962, he married to Evangeline Paraskevas and they have four children
George, Kalliope, Christos, Evangelos and two grandchildren.</p>
<p>His academic career started at Creighton University School of Medicine in
Omaha, Nebraska where he taught medical, dental, and graduate students all
aspects of Microbiology and guided his first graduate students. He also became
involved with the Greek Orthodox Church and served at various capacities.
In 1972, he left Creighton as Associate Professor and moved to the University
of South Florida College of Medicine as charter faculty and became Chief Microbiology
Section at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. In 1978, he was promoted
to the rank of Professor of Pathology and Medical Microbiology and continues
to provide his service to both the University of South Florida and to the
VA Hospital.</p>
<p>He has been involved in research, teaching, and service and has served as
major professor for a number of doctoral and master degree candidates. He
has trained a large number of residents in pathology, has performed basic
research and has published a number of papers and book chapters.</p>
<p>He has served on a number of University and VA committees and has devoted
many years to the admissions committee at the USF College of Medicine.</p>
<p>His service to the Greek Community in the Tampa Bay Area is well known and
has served the St. John Greek Orthodox Church continuously for 25 years serving
at all levels of the Parish Council. He has actively participated since 1984
in the planning and the establishment of the Greek Studies Center in the University
of South Florida and now is working and serves as treasurer of the AFGLC.</p>
