Press Release - AFGLC Educational Forum 2001
The AFGLC FORUM 2001 had the theme The Development of Interdisciplinary Centers for Hellenic Studies (ICHS): Linking Mission and Objectives with Realistic Strategies. The Forum was chaired by Professor John U. Balis, Vice President of AFGLC, and sponsored by The Synghelides & Koutras Families, of Athens, Greece. It was held at the University of South Florida (USF) on March 1-3, 2001. (See: HYPERLINK "http://www.AFGLC.org" www.AFGLC.org)

This year the event kicked off on the evening of Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Embassy Suites, in Tampa. A Lecture entitled: The Spirit of Homer was given by the world-renowned classicist Gregory Nagy, Professor of Classical Greek at Harvard University, and Director of Harvards Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. (See HYPERLINK "http://chs.harvard.edu/" http://chs.harvard.edu/). A Reception & Social Hour followed this fascinating lecture.

Professor Chris P. Tsokos, President of AFGLC, opened the Forum Friday morning by welcoming distinguished guests from both Greece and the USA. Professor Judy L. Genshaft, President of USF, and Professor Joann McCarthy, Dean of the International Affairs Center at USF, delivered greetings from the University. Dr. Dennis Koutras of Athens, Greece referred to the importance of supporting the AFGLC goals and objectives.

Professor William M. Murray, Professor of Greek History and Executive Director of ICHS, USF, described The Accomplishments of Our First Year. Ms. Kristine Trego, a student, Dept. of History and Classics at USF, presented Studying Greek Culture 140 Feet Under Water. The USF Classics Forum: Community Building and Student Mentoring was discussed by Professor Ava Chitwood, Dept. of World Language Education, USF. Professor Suzanne Murray, Dept. of History and Assistant Director of ICHS, USF, spoke about Curricular Innovations and Outreach. During the coffee break there was an interesting demonstration of a Catapult constructed by the student Joseph Leavitt.

Dr. Ippokratis Kantzios, Peter and Sophia Kourmolis endowed Assistant Professor in Greek Language and Literature, USF, discussed Modern Greek at USF, and Aristophanes in Tampa. These presentations were enriched by speeches in modern Greek by two ICHS students of modern Greek, Dimitrios Bamis, of Greek-American background, and Ranganath Chacavarthi an Indian, plus a performance by the USF Classics Club. These were very pleasant surprises for the Forum participants, demonstrating the outstanding progress and success of the ICHS in the short period of just a year.

Following those events was a talk by the ICHS Executive Director, Professor William, M. Murray, on the Future Directions for the ICHS at USF. Subsequently following was a positive Commentary by Professor Gregory Nagy, of Harvard. In the afternoon session five outstanding educators and academic administrators spoke about Expanding the ICHS Concept: The Role of AFGLC. Professor Blanche M. Touhill, Chancellor of the University of Missouri - St. Louis, delivered a message of support for the AFGLC concept concerning the development of ICHS in USA. Reverend Dr. Stanley Harakas, Honorary Professor of ICHS, and Professor of Orthodox Theology at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology spoke about ICHS and Religious Studies. Dr. Niki Kantzios of Tampa discussed The Role of Archeology in Structuring the ICHS Curricula , and suggested supplementing textual sources with physical material from archaeological finds. Dr. Peter N. Yiannos of Wilmington, Delaware made an impassioned plea for reintroducing (virtue) in the academic dictionary in his talk on Hellenic Revival: Interdisciplinary Centers for Hellenic Studies. Ms. Zozo Lidoriki of Athens, Greece discussed International Relations for Culture, stating that We are behind the Goals and Objectives of AFGLC.

A Round Table Discussion followed on The Spirit of Volunteerism in AFGLC. Professor Chris P. Tsokos, Department of Mathematics at USF, and President of AFGLC, stated: We are All Volunteers! Mr. John Hatsios, Secretary of AFGLC, discussed Managing the Expansion of AFGLC. Emeritus Professor Demetrios Halkias, of the Departments of Microbiology at USF, and Treasurer of AFGLC, spoke on AFGLC and the Greek Community. Mr. Nicholas Maroulis, Senior Advisor of AFGLC, talked about Monitoring Resources in a Non-Profit Organization: AFGLC. Professor John U. Balis, Department of Pathology, USF, and Vice President of AFGLC, summarized the discussion and presented concluding remarks.

The second days session started with greetings from USF by Professor S. David Stamps, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President, USF, and by Professor Renu Khator, Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, USF. Minister Alexios G. Christopoulos, Deputy Chief of the Embassy of Greece to the United States in Washington, DC, represented the Hellenic Republic for the third time this year at the AFGLC Forum. It is important and gratifying to have dignitaries who traditionally follow and are part of AFGLCs progress and success.

Minister Christopoulos congratulated AFGLC for its tremendous accomplishments and pledged continued support from Greece. The Honorable Ioannis Smpokos, former member of the Greek Parliament (also participated at the Zappeion Event in Athens in October 2000), delivered a warm message from Greece.

Professor Nicholas Artemiadis, President Emeritus, Academy of Athens, Greece, spoke about Greece, its Language and Civilization, and reiterated the Academys resolve to continue supporting our foundation in its noble educational mission. Professor Yannis A. Phillis, President of the Technical University of Crete, in Chania, Greece, delivered a message of support from that University.

A unique presentation followed by the Honorable General Manuel Jose Bonett, Ambassador of Colombia to Greece and a great philhellene. His speech about Hellenism in Colombia, greatly impressed the audience. Using modern technology, a teleconference was then established with Professor Maria Tzani of the School of Philosophy, University of Athens, Greece. Professor Tzani also belongs to the AFGLC-Athens Center. Members and dedicated supporters of AFGLC in Athens met at the teleconference site with Professor Tzani, who graciously provided them with the opportunity to address the Forum. The Athens participants, represented by Mr. John Camesas, sent us an enthusiastic message of support. Ideas about rejuvenating classical education and the humanities were exchanged across the Atlantic by means of this interesting teleconference.

Professors Chris P. Tsokos and John U. Balis summarized the accomplishments of this forum in their Concluding Remarks, and announced the AFGLC Educational Forum 2002. The USF Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies (ICHS) was then open to the public for a visit.
